A

Going back to school usually means less time for video games—unless you can make your mum and dad believe that scoring a great goal in “FIFA 2006” is a good way to study geometry and Newton’s laws of physics.

But there are always stolen moments of the school day between classes, when you can relax with friends over a good game. The introduction of more portable consoles like the Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance and Sony PlayStation Portable has made this possible.

The Nintendo DS has changed the ways gamers interact by adding in wireless features. One of the new DS games, “Nintendogs” (任天狗), is designed to bring together gamers from all over the world. Each gamer brings up his or her own dog. But in order to feed and train the dog better, gamers have to get online to meet others and exchange things that each dog needs.

“Nintendogs” is believed to be the next “Pokemon” (宠物小精灵)for Nintendo. The puppy simulator (模拟器)strikes a cord with young hearts. The bark mode, which fires up when two dog owners are within 20 feet of each other, sets up play parties where puppies interact. More than 600,000 people are playing this game in Japan, the US and Europe.

The PSP hit the shelves this summer and could be described as a status symbol. The sleek curves of the machine will really draw attention in a crowd.

Lots of teens have cell phones now, and lower priced phones are able to play pretty good mobile games. However, 3-D cell phone gaming is on the rise. It may not be long before the bus ride home is occupied by exciting games that you now play on your home computer.

But if Mum and Dad say no, tell them about the best bit: some games, such as those on the Nintendo DS, can encourage new friendships and teach the fine art of sharing.

After all, those are lessons certainly not contained in a history lesson.

56. A good excuse to play cell phone computer games is that _____.

THE BRONTE FAMILY

Yorkshire, England was the setting for two great novels(小说) of the 19th century. These were Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. The youngest sister, Anne, was also a gifted novelist, and her books have the same extraordinary quality as her sisters’.

Their father was Patrick Bronte, born in Ireland. He moved with his wife, Maria Bronte, and their six small children to Haworth in Yorkshire in 1820. Soon after, Mrs. Bronte and the two eldest children died, leaving the father to care for the remaining three girls and a boy.

Charlotte was born in 1816. Emily was born in 1818 and Anne in 1820. Their brother Branwell was born in 1817. Left to themselves, the children wrote and told stories and walked over the hills. They grew up largely self-educated. Branwell showed a great interest in drawing. The girls were determined to earn money for his art education. They took positions as teachers or taught children in their homes.

As children they had all written many stories. Charlotte, as a young girl, alone wrote 22 books, each with 60 to 100 pages of small handwriting. Therefore, they turned to writing for income. By 1847, Charlotte had written The Professor; Emily, Wuthering Heights; and Anne, Agnes Grey. After much difficulty Anne and Emily found a publisher(出版商), but there was no interest shown in Charlotte’s book. (It was not published until 1859). However, one publisher expressed an interest in seeing more of her work. Jane Eyre was already started, and she hurriedly finished it. It was accepted at once; thus each of the sisters had a book published in 1847.

Jane Eyre was immediately successful; the other two, however, did not do so well. People did not like Wuthering Heights. They said it was too wild, too animal-like. But gradually it came to be considered one of the finest novels in the English language. Emily lived only a short while after the publication of her book, and Anne died in 1849.

Charlotte published Shirley in 1849, and Villette in 1853. In 1854 she married Arthur Bell Nicholls. But only a year later, she died of tuberculosis(肺结核) as her sisters had.

60. What did the Bronte sisters want to do for Branwell Bronte?

  A. Help him write stories.

  B. Help him get trained in art.

  C. Teach him how to draw well.

  D. Teach him how to educate himself.

61. Which of the following was published after the death of its writer?

  A. Shirley. B. Villette C. Agnes Grey D. The Professor

62. The underlined words “the other two” in the 5th paragraph refer to _____.

  A. Shirley and Villette

  B. The professor and Agnes Grey

  C. Agnes Grey and Wuthering Heights

  D. The professor and Wuthering Heights

63. What do we know about the Bronte sisters from the text?

  A. Their novels interested few publishers.

  B. None of them had more than two books published.

  C. None of them lived longer than 40 years old.

Generally speaking, part-timers are better employees first of all because they are more disciplined. It is an item of faith among part- timers with young children that they are more efficient than their full-time partners, because they can’t delay. They simply have to get everything done by 5:30 p.m. in order to relieve the childcare.

Second, part-timers focus on the job rather than their own psychological needs. Someone who writes a novel out of working hours or looks after children is less likely to consider the company’s decision to target larger corporate(企业的) customers.

Third, part-timers are more loyal(忠诚). It is so hard to find a part-time job with real status(地位) that no one can easily afford to leave. Once an employee has tasted the delights of another 52 days off each year, they will not want to go back to the US pattern: most working Americans get less than three weeks of paid vacation each year.

It is true that part-timers lack single-minded drive. But to that I would counter. The creative and driven individuals who populated the management of most dot. coms(商业网站)spent far too much of their time arguing strategy(策略), concluding meaningless deals and politicking(竞选活动).

There is just one problem with hiring part-timers. The full-timers dislike the idea that someone else has a life outside work; they complain about absent part-timer colleagues; and, above all, they hate reporting to someone who puts in fewer hours. That means, in practice, that it is difficult to put part-timers into

management positions, even though they often have the right, calm and organized characteristics.

67. “It is an item of faith… their full-time partners ”(Para 1) means that _______.

A. part-timers are more faithful to their children than to their full-time colleagues.

B. people working part- time generally believe they have higher work efficiency

C. young children believe full- time workers are less efficient than part-timers

D. part-timers usually have stronger confidence in children than full-timers do

68. The chief executives of commercial websites_______.

A. are mainly part- time employees

B. lack single-minded drives in office

C. are generally very dull and unimaginative

D. waste too much time on meaningless things

69. Part-time workers are seldom promoted to management positions because of

_________.

A. peer (同事)pressure

B. consumer complaints

C. their incompetence

D. their characteristic defects

70. The author’s attitude toward part-timers is ______.

A. positive B. negative C. natural D. ambiguous

E

Every year in developing countries, a million people die from urban air pollution and twice that number from exposure to stove smoke inside their homes, another 3 million unfortunates die prematurely(过早地) every year from water-related diseases. All told, premature deaths and illnesses arising from environmental factors account for about a fifth of all diseases in poor countries, bigger than any other preventable factors, including malnutrition.

The link between environment and poverty is central to that great race for sustainability (可持续发展). It is a pity, then, that several powerful fallacies (谬论) keep getting in the way of sensible debate. One popular myth is that trade and economic growth make poor countries’ environmental problems worse. Growth, it is said, brings with it urbanization (城市化), higher energy consumption(消耗) and industrialization—all factors that contribute to pollution and threaten our health.

Another common view is that poor countries should pollute now and clean up later. Certainly poor countries should not be made to adopt American or European environmental standards. But there is evidence to suggest that poor countries can and should try to handle some environmental problems now, rather than wait till they have become richer.

One powerful—and until recently ignored—weapon in the fight for a better environment is local people. Much academic research has shown that the poor are often victims of resource consumption: it tends to be rich locals or outsiders who are responsible for the worst exploitation. Local people usually have a better knowledge of local ecological conditions than experts in faraway capitals, as well as a direct interest in improving the quality of life in their village.

71. From the first paragraph we can learn that ________.

A. in developing countries 6 million people die from environmental factors each year.

B. in developing countries 3 million people lose their lives each year because of water shortage

C. in developing countries environmental factors are the biggest cause for abnormal death

D. in developing countries more people die from malnutrition

72. According to the author, which of the following contributes most to environmental problems in poor countries?

A. Poverty B. Urban air pollution

C. Water-related diseases D. Rich locals and outsiders

73. As for the view that trade and economic growth make poor countries’ environmental problems worse, the author regards it as ______.

A. reasonable B. absurd

C. interesting D. sensible

74. The main idea of Para 3 is ______.

A. poor countries should pollute now and clean up later

B. poor countries should take environmental problems seriously as early as      possible

C. poor countries should follow American or European environmental standards

D. some poor countries hold a false guideline in tacking environmental problems.

75. According to the author, people who can play an important role in tacking environmental problem are ______.

  A. rich locals B. outsiders

  C. local residents D. environmental experts
