阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

If it’s possible to see red about not seeing red, that is what I was doing. We had misjudged the timing of our autumn trip to see the changing leaves in the Great Lakes States, and I was really upset. No matter how I strained my eyes I could not spot red anywhere. Not even a bit of golden yellow broke through the dull greenery.

This vacation was a complete waste. I sat alone in the backseat of our rented car and got angry as we drove north through the dull, dark green. In the front seat my husband and father chatted merrily, obviously unconcerned.

Then a motto came to mind: “ Happiness is a decision.” It must have been something my mother said. She was always passing on words of advice. When I was a child she gave me a little black book with empty pages. On the flyleaf she had written, “ Look for a beautiful thing and you will find it.” I was supposed to keep a record of the most beautiful thing I saw each day.

I remember spending hours debating what I’d write down. A baby’s dimpled smile? A stone shining with fool’s gold? Pictures in the clouds, or tulips tipping their heads? I found so many things it was impossible to pick just one.

Now, on the road, I played Mother’s game again. I took in the all-green scenery. Thick forests lined both sides of the highway. The long conical pines and spruce were seen here and there. Maple leaves danced in the gentle wind. I felt like a girl again―surrounded by beautiful things.

Later in the trip, after we crossed the Upper Peninsula and drove into Canada, I found the bright fall plants I had been looking for. But by then I’d already seen a million shades of green, the infinite variety and beauty that only our heavenly Father can produce. And that we can always find―if we look closely enough.

56. What was the purpose of the author’s trip?

A.    To see the green forest.

B.    To have a sightseeing across America.

C.    To see red leaves in fall.

D. To try out the motto her mother gave her.

57. What is the point the author wants to show in the passage?

A.    Nothing is too difficult if you put your heart into it.

B.    No pains, no gains.

C.    Failure is the mother of success.

D. Beauty exists if you have an eye for it.

58. Which of the following can best describe the author’s feeling at the end of her trip?

A.    Delighted B. Angry. C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.

59. The underlined phrase “ see red ” in the first paragraph probably means_____.

A.    get discouraged B. get angry C. get ashamed D. get excited

                 B

Very soon a computer will be able to teach you English. It will also be able to translate any language for you too. It’s just one more incredible result of the development of microprocessors-those tiny parts of a computer commonly known as “ silicon chips”. So give up going to classes, stop buying more textbooks and relax. In a couple of years you won’t need the international language of English.

Already Texas Instruments in the United States is developing an electronic translation machine. Imagine a Spanish secretary, for example, who wants to type a letter from the boss to a businessman in Sweden. All he or she will have to do is this: first type the letter in Spanish. The letter will appear on a television screen. After a few seconds the translated letter will appear on another television screen in Stockholm in perfect Swedish. And that’s not all. Soon a computer will be able to teach you English, if you really want to learn the language. You’ll sit in front of a television screen and practise endless structures. The computer will tell you when you correct and when you are wrong. It will even talk to you because the silicon chips can change electronic impulses into sounds. And clever programmers can predict the responses you, the learner, are likely to make.

So think of it. You will be able to teach yourself at your own pace. You will waste very little time, and you can work at home. And if after all that, you still can’t speak English you can always use the translating machine. In a few years, therefore, perhaps there will be no need for BBC Modern English, or BBC English by Radio programmes-no more textbooks or teachers of English. Instead of buying an exciting new textbook, the computer will ask you to replace it with microprocessor one thousand nine hundred and eighty-four. Fast, reliable and efficient language learning and translating facilities will be available to you. Think of that no more tears or embarrassing moments. One little problem is that a computer can’t laugh yet but the scientists are working on it. Happy learning.

D. learning English will no longer be a difficult task

The use of the word imitation reminds me that we ought to make some comments on the risk of people imitating what they see on the screen in the way of crime or violence. First there was always a risk of children acting out scenes which could be dangerous. For example, I remember a woman who was head of a middle school telling me that she had happened to look out of her window when the children were in the playground and had seen them putting a small boy on a chair with a rope round his neck and the rope over the branch of a tree; fortunately she was in time to get there before the child was hung. I remember a film in particular in which the hero who was imprisoned had escaped by electrocuting his guard, the technique of doing this being shown in detail. This was the kind of scene which we could cut for these reasons.

In films for young people and adults we always tried to keep off the screen any details of criminal techniques, such as how to open a locked door with a piece of hard plastic or how to open a safe; if we were consulted before production, I used to advise that the details should not be shown. When I gave talks in prisons about film checking I had full support for this, since fathers who were in prison for criminal offences did not want their children to get on crime.

Every time I gave a talk in a prison someone used to mention the French film Rififi made by Jules Dassin in 1954. This remarkable film showed in great detail a robbery of a jeweller’s shop, the robbery lasting about half an hour and being backed only by natural sound…one of the most brilliant film sequences of all time. I remember our discussions at the time. We thought the robbery was finished only with the use of advanced and obviously expensive equipment and that only the most experienced and skilled criminals could possibly imitate it; we believed therefore that it was relatively safe. When talking in prisons some years later I learned that there had been several robberies in which the techniques had been copied, so perhaps we were wrong.

67. The writer thinks that _______.

A.    the details of the criminal technique should be kept

B.    the details of the crime should not be shown on the screen

C.    children should not imitate what they saw on the screen

D. it was quite safe for children to imitate what they had seen on the screen

68.What was the writer’s attitude towards the film in which the hero had escaped

by electrocuting the guard?

A.    The writer kept the same opinion.

B.    The writer was strongly against it.

C.    The writer thought the film had some value.

D. The writer did not show his/her attitude.

69. Parents in prison agreed to film checking because _____.

A.    they did not want their children to follow them

B.    the crime on the screen could be imitated without difficulty

C.    they had given a talk on it

D. they had made mistakes

70. All the following statements about “ Rififi” are true EXCEPT _____.

A.    that the robbery shown needs experience and skills

B.    that some very good tools were used in the robbery

C.    that the film showed the technique in detail

D. that the technique of the robbery was not imitated

71. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.

A.    only the people in prison supported film checking

B.    only children imitated what they had seen on the screen

C.    it is hard for children to tell the differences between real life and the imaginary

D. the writer used to advise the details of crime should be shown

At a three - hour hearing (意见听取会) on testing, Eva S. Moskowitz, chairwoman of the New York City Council' s Education Department, said she found it troubling that under the present system, a general education student would be required to take 21 citywide and statewide tests from kindergarten through 12th grade. She found fault with the high price charged by the companies that make the tests. She also objected to teachers' being out of the classroom for days at a time to grade the exams.

But she seemed most dissatisfied with what she called the test scores' slow return. She gave an example: Results for students in grades 3, 5, 6 and 7 who take the citywide English language arts exam in the spring at a cost of $1.2 million to the city will not be sent to schools until June, when the school year is over.

Ms. Mei, the city' s senior instructional manager for testing, said that schools use a number of tests, not just the citywide and statewide tests, to find out how students are getting on with their studies so that proper instructions can be offered. And she said the formal tests are valuable in helping decide which students will be invited to summer school, and for instructional purposes in the next school year.

Ms. Moskowitz pressed Ms. Mei on the quarterly diagnostic tests. Those scores are not mailed home to parents, although Ms. Mei said they could be found out online. Ms. Moskowitz said she strongly believed parents should be able to know those scores without having to use the Internet. In answer to this, Ms. Mei said that the results had been delivered to the schools in computerized form since October, and were there for any parent who asked.

Toward the end of the hearing, to further support her central point, Ms. Moskowitz told .Ms. Mei, "If we're giving these tests without changing educational practices, we're spitting in the wind."

72. According to Ms Mei, formal tests are valuable because __

  A. they can serve instructional purposes

  B. they are citywide and statewide tests

  C. they are made by special companies

  D. they can help students in summer school

73. Which of the following is true about diagnostic tests?

  A. They are held on the Internet.

  B. They take place every three months.

  C. The scores are mailed home to parents.

  D. The results are delivered in printed form.

74. What can be seen from the text?

  A. An advantage of the hearing.

  B. A disadvantage of computers.

  C. An advantage of the educational system.

  D. A disadvantage of citywide and statewide tests.

75. What would be the best title for the text?

  A. Fewer Tests Needed B. Less Spent on Tests

  C. Quicker Test Results Required D. Better Educational System Wanted

六、书面表达:

Dear Sir;

I’m writing to request a valuable chance to be one of the host families for the American Washington exchange student. My house has an area of 140 square metres. It is large and clean with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, which lies in a beautiful area of the city. I’m good at English and my parents are both teachers of English, so I’m sure we won’t have any difficulty communicating with each other. At the weekend, I can show the foreign students around some places of interest of Xiamen, such as Gulangyu. I can also help them learn more about Chinese history and culture. Last year we received two British students, who enjoyed their stay with us very much. Besides, my mother cooks well, so the students will be able to enjoy delicious Chinese food. I would greatly appreciate it if I could have the chance to make friends with them.

  Looking forward to your reply.

                      Yours sincerely,

                      Li Ming
