Many people have described television as a passive activity that is harmful to children’s education. However, there are good and bad ways to watch television. Parents who are interested in exploiting television as a learning tool can actually turn time in front of TV into an educational chance.

Probably the most familiar educational way to use television is to simply watch educational programs. In particular, this means selecting channels and programs specially designed for educational purposes. Along with traditional educational shows for children on public broadcasting channels, cable television (有线电视)now offers kids and adults a wide variety of educational programs, with everything from nature shows to historical events in different countries.

Captioning (字幕)such as “ closed captioning” for hearing disabled viewers provides another way for parents to exploit the educational possibilities of television. One study showed that children who watched captioned TV got great improvement in their vocabulary and oral reading ability. In addition, parents can make any show a learning class by watching television together with children. By actively joining children in the programs that they are watching, parents can help with the development of such skills as predicting (预见)and summarizing. In order to develop predicting skills, parents and children could first refer to a program’s description in a viewing guide. After reading the program description and guessing what might happen in the program, parents and children could watch together to see which predictions were correct. And to practice summarizing, after watching a program, parents can turn off the TV and ask what the story was about. This kind of activity helps children develop thinking skills such as arranging events in an order and memorizing information.

Although there will still be plenty of times when children watch TV simply for passive enjoyment, parents can help make at least part of their children’s viewing time a more productive activity. Used intelligently by exploiting the learning chances available through various programs, television can play an instructive role in children’s education.

64. Which activity is NOT suggested in the passage?

A. Talking about TV shows.

B. Watching: captions on TV.

C. Enjoying films about nature.

D. Watching shows for homework.

65. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Parents can simply make any show a learning class for their children.

B. To make watching TV a more productive activity parents should include themselves in the producing process.

C. Most parents have changed their attitude to their kids’ watching 1TV arid become positive to the problem.

D. In a way, it is how parents act that leads to whether watching TV may do good or not to their children.

66. We can infer from the last paragraph that _________

A. not every minute when a child watches television must be educational

B. children should not use television for passive enjoyment

C. some children prefer reading to watching television

D. television offers more learning chances than school

67. Which of the following questions is the major one discussed in the passage?

A. What makes television more interesting than books?

B. Why should schools put television into classrooms?

C. How can parents use television as a teaching tool?

D. Which program can actually make kids smarter?

D

The single, decisive factor that made it possible for mankind to settle in lasting communities (社区,聚居地)was agriculture. After farming was developed in the Middle East in about 6500 BC, people living in family units did not have to be on the move continually searching for food or hunting their animals. Once people could control the production of food and be assured of a reliable supply of it, their lives changed completely.

Farming was a revolutionary discovery. It not only made settlements possible and later the building of cities but it also made available a reliable food supply. With more food available, more people could be fed. Population therefore increased. The growing number of people available for more kinds of work led to the development of new social formations. With more and more food, a community could support a variety of workers who were not farmers.

Farming in the world over has always relied upon a dependable water supply. For the earliest societies this meant rivers and streams or regular rainfall. The first great civilizations grew up along rivers. Later communities were able to develop by taking advantage of the rainy seasons.

All of the ancient civilizations probably developed in much the same way, in spite of a few differences. As villages grew, the production of more numerous goods became possible. Cloth could be woven from wood. Houses made of wood, brick, and stone could be put up.

The science of mathematics was an early outgrowth of agriculture. People studied the movements of the moon, the sun, and the planets to work out seasons. By doing so they created the first calendars(日历). With a calendar it was possible to find out the arrival of each growing season. Measurement of land areas was necessary if field was to be divided accurately. Measurements of amounts, for example, of seeds or grains was also a factor in farming and housekeeping. Later measures of value as money exchange became common.

All of the major ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, and China appeared in the 4th millennium BC. Historians still argue over which one came into being first. It may well have been the Middle East. This place reaches out from the Nile River in Egypt northward along the coast of former Palestine, then eastward into Asia to include Mesopotamia. In this area people settled along the riverbanks and practiced field agriculture. This kind of farming depended on the reproduction of seed, normally from grain crops.

68. The final result of the development of agriculture was that _________

A. the population increased slowly

B. a variety of jobs were open to people

C. a constant supply of food was certain

D. a new social formation came into being

69. Which of the following is true according to the writer?

A. Societies in the past in different parts of the world grew in similar ways.

B. Cloth-making marked an important period in agricultural development.

C. Modern cities developed out of originally wealthier villages.

D. Mathematics helped create the agricultural society.

70. The development of mathematics ___________

A. got the society out of the agricultural age

B. made possible the exchange of agricultural goods

C. enabled people to arrange their agricultural activities better:

D. helped create early agricultural civilization around the world

71. It can be safely concluded that ___________

A. the earliest civilization first came into being in the Middle East

B. the development of maths played a decisive role in the birth of modern cities

C. all ancient civilizations around the world developed in exactly the same way

D. the development of agriculture played a very important role in human history

72. The passage is mainly about ___________

A. the relationship between agriculture and society

B. the importance of agriculture

C. the origin of agriculture

D. the ancient civilization

Adults in the family all work together to make a special kind of Chinese food--dumplings while small children play about in the house, or watch the New Year Special Program on TV. When the New Year bell sounds, firework and crackers begin to explode here and there, which usually lasts hours. Then a special meal of dumplings starts and the whole family stay up for the night, chatting and playing games.

During the next four days, quite a lot of people visit Chinese temple fairs, which is quite like Carnival in the West. Some families go to places of interest for a visit throughout the country.

As a rule, on the sixth day when the Spring Festival ends, most people go back to work again.

Of course Chinese people spend the festival variously from place to place. If needed, I will tell you more about it.

Best wishes

Yours ever,

Wang Hua

Nowadays, many Chinese college and high school students study abroad. They have their own reasons for doing so. Yet, in my opinion, it’s not wise for small children to do the same thing, for they are too young to take care of themselves. Their parents have to stay with them abroad, looking after them all day long. It’s a great cost. On the other hand, what they have learnt at home cannot meet the need of what they are to learn abroad. So it is a better choice to study at home for their young age.

Man: This basket is new, isn’t it, Alice?

Woman: Yes, I’ve just bought it. It’s big enough to hold all my kid’s toys and some other things.

Man: Oh, I’ve never seen one as big as this. I must get one.

(Text 2)

Man: Excuse me. I wonder if you could tell us where we can find the manager Mr. Parker.

Woman: Certainly. He should be at the office on the third floor. I’m going that way. I’ll show you.

(Text 3)

Woman: Are you sure Sam won’t mind your borrowing his bicycle?

Man: No, of course not! I told you, he’s a friend of mine, very kind to people.

(Text 4)

Woman: Do you like this coat, or shall I take the blue one?

Man: I like both of them, but I think the blue one fits you better. Woman: OK. I’ll get the blue one. It’s less expensive anyway.

(Text 5)

Man: The film museum is one of the most modem buildings in that city, isn’t it?

Woman: Yes, it was designed by a very famous architect and there’s a lot of it still to be done.

(Text 6)

Woman: Good afternoon, Sir. Can I help you?

Man: Good afternoon. My wife is still on the way. She is late. Woman: What time did you arrange to meet her, Mr. Jones?

Man: Twenty minutes ago. Has our table been taken?

Woman: No, no. Your table has been reserved. Even if people are late, I always reserve the table.

Man: Oh, good. Thanks.

Woman: Would you start your meal without her?

Man: No, I think I’ll wait a little longer. She’ll be here very soon.

(Text 7)

Woman: Excuse me.

Man: Oh, hi. Can I help you?

Woman: Can you tell me how much farther it is to Emberton?

Man: Emberton? Yes, that’s six miles away from here.

Woman: Six miles! Oh dear, I wish I’d known that. I’d never have tried to walk. Maybe I could have taken a bus. Anyhow, thank you.

Man: Oh, just a minute. I’m going to Emberton in my car. I’ll give you a lift, if you like.

Woman: Oh, thank you. That’s very kind of you.

Man: But what about all these bags ? Are you going to carry them all the way?

Woman: Oh, no, no. I’ll put them back. I’m so glad to have met you here.

(Text 8)

Woman: We’re nearly there. Will we be allowed to visit all the ships, Peter ? The space-station and aircraft equipment, as well as the others?

Man: Yes, I expect so. We shall see most of them.

Woman: Good! Visiting spaceships is always exciting. But remember, we’ve got work to do. We’ve got a story to write and photographs to take.

Man: Will we be allowed to take photographs?

Woman: Yes, I think so. And there’ll be a chance to ask questions.

(Text 9)

M: Well, perhaps not everyone can understand what I’m doing. I go high up in the air in a basket to reach the windows on tall office buildings, so I can wash them. I really like my job because I enjoy being outdoors. I like to breathe the fresh air and look at the beautiful views of the city. It’s really relaxing. And I earn a high salary. But.... My job is dangerous. I have to be very careful not to fall out of the basket, and 1 have to be careful not to drop things on people below. Window washing is a great job for me because I’m good with my hands, and I don’t mind doing dangerous work. Even so, it was difficult for me to get started as a window washer. But now, I have my own business. It’s great!

(Text 10)

Woman: What are you doing here?

Man: I’m buying a new camera.

Woman: On the computer?

Man: Yeah, I like to shop on the Internet.

Woman: Oh, yeah?

Man: Sure, Internet shopping is great because it’s easy to compare prices, so you can save

money. The camera I want costs $800 in the Stores, but I found it on the Internet for only

$600.

Woman: That’s a good deal --- you save $200.

Man: Yeah, and it’s a lot easier than shopping in the stores. You don’t have to leave your house. You just send in your credit card information and they send it to your home.

Woman: That’s true--- but I’d rather pay cash than use my credit card. And I don’t like sending my credit card information over the Internet.

Woman: Hi, I’m Laura Lee from News Radio here in New York City. I’m standing in front of a

community garden. Community gardens are gardens that many people make together. Each person uses a small area to plant flowers or vegetables. Together, they make a community garden. It’s a nice way to have a little piece of the country in the city or the suburbs.

This garden started a few years ago. But now the city wants to remove the garden. Let’s go talk to someone and see what he thinks about it. Hello.. ..How are you doing?

Man: Oh, hi.

Woman: i’m from News Radio. I understand the city wants to remove this garden. Is that correct?

Man: Yes, that’s right. Can you believe it? After all this work we’ve done.

Woman: You don’t sound happy.

Man: I’m not. You see, ten years ago before we planted the garden, this was just an empty lot. The city gave us this empty lot to make a community garden. All the people in the neighborhood worked really hard. We planted everything you see.., flowers, vegetables, trees, and made this beautiful garden.

Woman: It does make the neighborhood look nice.

Man: You bet it does. You should have seen this place before we planted the garden. It had rubbish on it and people just hung around. We made it beautiful. Now, the city wants to remove all of this to build apartment buildings. I can’t believe it.

Woman: Well, we all know there are not enough apartments in New York... right?

Man: Yeah, I know it, too. But there are other empty lots in the city. They can build apartments there.

Woman: Are there other reasons this garden is important?
