第二节: 完型填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)

阅读下面短文,撑握其大意,然后从36—55各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项

Everyone knows that taxation is necessary in a modem state. Without it, it would be impossible to pay the soldiers and policemen who protect us; nor the workers in the government offices who look 36  our health, our food, our water, and all the other things that we can not do ourselves;  37  also the persons who govern the country for us.  38   means of taxation, we pay for things that we need just as much as we need 39   to live and something to eat.

Though everyone knows that taxation is necessary, different people have different 40 about how taxation should be arranged. Should each other have to 41   a certain amount of money to the government each year? Or should there be a tax on things people buy or sell? If the first kind of taxation is used, should everyone pay the same tax, 42   he or she is rich or poor? If the second kind of taxation is used, should everything be taxed equally? In most countries, a direct tax on persons, called an income tax, is used. It is arranged in 43   a way that the poor people pay nothing, and the 44  of tax grows greater as the taxpayer' s income grows. In some countries, for example, the tax on the 45   people goes as high as 90 or 95 percent.

Countries with direct taxation nearly always have indirect taxation, too. Many things imported   46  the country are taxed. Of course, it is the people who buy these imported things 47  really have to pay the duties, in the 48  of higher prices. In some countries, there is 49   a tax on things produced in the country itself. If the most necessary things are taxed, a lot of money is 50  , but the poor people  51   the most. If unnecessary things like 52  and fur coats are taxed, less money is obtained, but the tax is   53   because the rich pay it.

Probably this kind of 54   tax, together with a direct tax on income which is low for the poor and high for the rich, is the best 55   .

第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

The first breath-taking pictures of the Earth taken from space showed it as a solid ball covered by brown land masses and blue-green oceans. We had never seen the Earth from that distance before. To us, it appeared as though the Earth had always looked that way and always would. Scientists now know, however, that the surface of the Earth is not as permanent as we had thought.

Scientists explain that the surface of our planet is always moving. Continents moves about the Earth like huge ships at sea. They float on pieces of the Earth' s outer skin. New outer skin is created as melted rock pushed up from below the ocean floor. Old outer skin is destroyed as it rolls down into the hot area and melts again.

Only since the 1960s have scientists really begun to understand that the Planet Earth is a great living machine. Some experts have said this new understanding is one of the most important revolutions in scientific thought. The revolution is based on the work of scientists who study the movement of the continents — a science called plate tectonics.

The modern story of plate tectonics, begins with the German scientist Alfred Wegener. Before World War One, Wegener argued that the continents had moved and were still moving. He said the idea first occurred to him when he observed that the coastlines of South America and Africa could fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. He proposed that the two continents might have been one and then split apart.

Wegener was not the first person to wonder about the shape of the continents. About 500 years ago, explorers thought about it when they made the first maps of America. The explorers noted the east coastlines of North America and South America would fit almost exactly into the west coastlines of Europe and South Africa. What the explorers did not do, but Wegener did, was to investigate the idea that continents move.

56. What does the writer mainly tell us in the passage?

  A. The first breath-taking pictures of the Earth taken from space.

  B. Human's recognition of the Earth's surface.

  C. The German scientist Alfred Wegener.

  D. The early explorers' discovery.

57. Which is true according to the passage?

  A. We didn't see the Earth from far away until we saw the pictures taken in the space.

  B. Our ancient thought that the surface of the Earth is still.

  C. Alfred Wegener was not the first person to investigate the idea that the continents move.

  D. The coastlines of India and Africa could fit together.

58. What does the last word of the third paragraph "tectonics" mean?

  A. Study of construction. B. Study of architecture.

  C. The Earth's surface.     D. Structural geology.

59. What did the explorers find?

  A. The coastlines of South America and Africa could fit together.

  B. The coastlines of North America and Africa could fit together.

  C. The coastlines of North America and Europe could fit together.

D. The coastlines of North America and India could fit together.

B

In the course of working my way through school, I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of these jobs was as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was hard; the pay was poor; and, most of all, the working conditions were terrible.

First of all, the job made huge demands on my strength. For ten hours a night, I took boxes that rolled down a metal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice. I once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night.

I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor. I was paid the lowest wage of that time ----two dollars and hour. Because of the low pay, I felt eager to get as much as possible. I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $ 100 a week.

But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions. During work I was limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading trucks with those heavy boxes in near-zero-degree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice, which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left, I had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.

I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked. By the time I left, I was determined never to go back there again.

60.Why did the writer have to take many jobs at that time?

  A. To pay for his schooling. B. To save for his future.

  C. To support his family. D. To gain some experience.

61.The following facts describe the terrible working conditions of the plant EXCEPT___________.

A. loading boxes in the freezing cold

A. The writer’s unhappy school life.

B. The writer’s eagerness to earn money.

Land, unlike labor and capital, has a special feature: It is in strictly fixed supply in total. Because of this, we say that its price is demand-determined. In other words, the price of land is determined completely by what families and firms are willing to pay for it. But not all the land is the same. Some land is more valuable than other land. The value of land to a potential user may depend upon the characteristics of the land itself or upon its location.

Consider the potential uses of a piece of land in a suburb of Kansas City, Allan wants to build a clothing store in that place. He estimates that he can earn economic profits of $10,000 per year there because of the land' s excellent location. Bella, another person interested in buying the corner, believes that she can earn $ 35,000 in economic profits if she builds a drug store there. Clearly, Bella will be more likely to get the land.

Because location is often the key to profits, landowners are frequently able to squeeze their renters. One of the most popular locations in the Boston area, for example, is Harvard Square. There are dozens of restaurants in and around the square, and most of them are full most of the time. Despite this seeming success, most Harvard Square restaurant owners are not getting rich, because they must pay very high rents for the locations of their restaurants. A large part of the restaurant' s revenues goes to rent the land.

Although the supply of land is generally perfectly fixed, the supply of land in a given use may not be so. As the population of a city grows, housing developers find themselves willing to pay more and more for land. As land becomes more valuable for development, some farmers sell out, and the supply of land that can be used for development increases.

68. What' s the difference between land and other resources?

A. Land' s supply is strictly fixed.

B. The prices of other resources are lower.

C. Land can't be used up.

D. Land is more useful.

69. Which of the following can' t determine the price of a piece of land.

  A. Its location. B. Its purchasers' purpose.

  C. The total amount of its supply for general use. D. Its features.

70. Which of the following is wrong according to the passage.'?

  A. The price of a piece of land is changeable.

  B. The profit of a shop is often determined by its location.

  C. Most Harvard Square restaurant owners would be getting rich, if they paid lower rents for the locations of their restaurants.

  D. The supply of land for development might fall down.

71. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

  A. The Use of Land B. The Natural Resources

C. The Land Market     D. The Land Development

What is the greatest regret?

Recently a survey was conducted in Europe among elderly people over 60 years old. The topic is: What is the greatest regret? Here is the result.

72% regret they didn’t work hard enough when they were young while 67% think they chose a wrong career. More than half of them (58%) regret not having had enough exercise and 11% think they haven’t earned enough money.

In my opinion, it is really true that the greatest regret is not working hard enough when one is young. When young, he is energetic and quick to learn. He should seize the golden chance or he will get nothing but regret when he is old, just as the Chinese saying goes.
