The trees arrived by post, a half-open parcel. Terry and his father took them down the garden and planted them in their prepared places. Terry had great hopes of the middle tree, now set in the holy spot where Henry, his cat, run over, had been laid to rest a year before. The nine trees made an avenue down one side of the garden, where there was already a fifteen-foot-tall stonewall between the garden and the back yards of the Jenkins Street houses.
"Why do we want a row of trees as well as a wall?" Terry asked his father.
His father said, "For privacy. These trees grow very thickly. "
His father's love of privacy often puzzled Terry, but he could see part of the point here.
The houses in Jenkins Street were on higher ground. His friend Leslie lived in number
twelve, and Leslie had only to stand on a box to see right over the wall.
"Will the trees grow higher than the wall?" Terry asked then.
"Oh yes, twice as high if not more. It'll take a few years but they'll grow."
So they were going to have nine trees thirty feet tall, to keep them from being overlooked. Terry wondered why this was so desirable. He said, "Our garden is very pretty. Why can't we let the people over the wall see it? That wouldn't be showing off, would it?"
"No, I don't think it would be," his father said. "Yet some people might feel a bit less happy if they can always see a good thing that isn't theirs. We don't want to be the cause of any jealousy if we can help it."
This consideration for other people's feelings must be a grown-up thing. Terry thought. It was not his idea of how to run things. He said, "These trees are planted just to stop people being jealous of us. '
His father looked at him. "It isn't much trouble, Terry," he said. "These trees will grow without help from us. They'll be beautiful. And listen to them. You can already hear them whispering to us in the wind."
56. Row do we know that Terry's father was expecting the trees?

It was a brutol, senseless crime, and Toronto Police yesterday offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of 83.year-old Ann Zeidenberg's killers.
"It's time not to sit on your hands anymore," Staff Insp. Jeff MeGuire told a news conference yesterday, appealing to anyone who may know the killers or killers' identity to contact police.
Fire fighters responding to a call found Zeidenberg's body in her Forest Hill home on the afternoon of March 18. Further investigation made it known that the home had been searched thoroughly before being set ablaze.
A Crime Stoppers re-enactment(现场重现) issued yesterday showed two men entering the home, then leaving in what appeared to be an orange and white tow truck.
"I can't tell you if it was exactly like that vehicle, but it was described in that manner to us, "said McGuire.
Police believe more than one individual took part in the robbery, and have had contact with at least one anonymous (匿名的) tipster ( person who sells tips or information) who wasn't involved in the crime, but has "intimate knowledge of what has occurred, "according to McGuire.
"We're very confident there are people close enough that they did contact us through an anonymous chain, "he added.

Is Barbie the doll of Christmas past? If not ,the little lady is starting to show her 45 years in a changing toy industry.
Her global sales fell 13 per cent in the last three months compared with the same period last year. And Barbie's maker, toy giant Mattel Inc. ,laid partial blame for its declining third-quarter profits on her perfect, plastic shoulders.
In 2004,her global sales saw quarterly decreases of six per cent,13 per cent and now, another 13 per cent.
"It's been a challenging year" says Matters Lisa Marie Bongiovanni. Her boss, CEO Robert Eckert, told analysts in a conference call that Mattel's "biggest challenge ahead is making the fashion (doll) business better."
Yes, Barbie Millicent Roberts needs help. Her Sliding sales came as--for the first time ever---Barbie failed to hit the top-l0 Christmas toys list by Britain's Toy Retailers Association.
Marcia MacQuarrie, toys editor at Today's Parent magazine, says Barbie has never faced competition as fierce as that from Bratz. The new arrivals on the doll scene are chipping away at (keep breaking small pieces off)what was once Barbie's tuff(地盘).
Just four years old, the multi-ethnic Bratz dolls have big heads, thick beets, sculpted faces and the kind of bright, funky(古怪的) clothes a tween pop star might wear. They tap into a post-Spice Girls ethic, with streetwise fashion that's a world away from the nice gowns (a long dress) Barbie has been seen in.
Among poor sales to tweens, Barbie is experiencing a thorough overhaul (革新)this year. She deserted Kan--after daring 43 years--on the eve of Valentine's Day, causing Bennifer-style headlines.
Mattel considers Barhie's rebirth job 1 for 2004.
72. The last sentence of the passage indicates that _________.

B. Barbie will come back to life
C. Barbie will create many jobs in 2004
D. Mattel will make her greatest efforts to regain Barbie's popularity
73. The "new arrivals" in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A. new Barbies B. four-year-old boys
C. Bratz dolls D. newly arrived shoppers for dolls
74. By "...with streetwise fashion that's a world away from the nice gowns Barbie has been seen in", the author wants to tell the reader that ______.
A. Brat, lives far away from Barbie
B. Bratz and Barbie belong to two different countries
C. Bmtz's dressing style is quite different from Barbie's
D. Bratz was bern in a different century from Barbie
75. We can infer from the passage that _________.

B. Barbie was once very popular all around the world
C. Barbie was the last on the list of top-ten Christmas toys
D. Barbie faces a fierce competition from Bratz

We middle school students have had many tests or exams. We have both achieved success and suffered from failure. Different students take different attitudes to failure. Some fall in low spirits when they don't do well in the exams. They usually lose heart and no longer study as hard as before. But most students take an active attitude towards failure. They encourage themselves to be serf-confident. They find out and analyze the causes so that they will no longer make similar mistakes. I agree with those with active attitudes. As we all know, failure is the mother of success. Even great men may have failed many times before they succeeded. So we must deal with our failure correctly.

M: Would you please tell me what you were doing when the accident happened and what you saw?
W: Yes, I was driving home from work. It was about 5:15 ,and there was a blue car in front of me. We were both driving along Harbor Road when a small white Ford suddenly shot out of the side read. It shot right in front of the blue car. The driver tried to stop, but it was impossible. He ran into the white Ford.
M: How fast was the car in front of you going when the accident happened?
W: The blue car? Thirty miles and hour. Certainly no more than that.
M: And the white Ford shot out without any warning?
W: Yes, that's right.
M: How can you be sure that the blue car was only doing thirty?
W: Because I was only doing thirty, and the blue car wasn't going any faster than I was.
M: Are you sure of that? Absolutely positive?
W: Yes, I am. I'm positive.
M: How can you be so positive? Were you looking at your speedmeter when the accident happened?
W: Of course not. I was looking at the road ahead. That's how I managed to see the accident.
M: Well, if you were not looking at your speedmeter how can you possibly be sure how fast you were going?
W: Because I never go faster than 30 on that road. It's against law--that's why.
