The Erie Canal was the first important national waterway built in the US. It crossed New York from Buffalo on Lake Erie Troy to Albany on the Hudson River. A problem has been troubling me and I would like to share it with you .We seem to be living in a huge difficult situation. And I don’t know if there is a solution. I am not even sure that it is a “Problem,” but here it is.

Let’s begin by looking at the world situation. We have argued that wars must be given up. But modern technologies have brought us to the point where weapons of mass destruction are becoming easier and cheaper to make. Now they are in the possession of a few large military powers Before long, it is likely that other nations will also have the ability to develop and use these terrible weapons. If this happens, or when this happens, many nations have the ability to destroy other nations, and other nations probably will have time for retaliatory(报复) strike. Under these conditions there can be no winners, only losers.

In spite of the terrible international situation, in our daily lives we place the highest value on winning. We are taught that “everybody loves a winner” and that “winning is everything.” Our sports teams are told that they must win. Our entertainment culture is based on winning. Contests are held to determine the winner . This becomes a matter of local and national pride. We are taught to win.

In America, and in other western nations, children and adults are taught that to be successful, they must win. Of course, when there are “winners” there must also be “losers”, We are conditioned to be either winners or losers.

When there are winners, there are losers. There is nothing in between. This is what we are taught . It is part of our western culture.

Our western societies praise winning. They do not consider “impasse(僵局)”as a choice. A tie(平局)game, for example, is said to be like kissing your sister. It pleases no one. In most of our sports games, we have additional periods of time in order to avoid a “tie game”. In football it is called “sudden death.” Even our language is full of words against tie games .We call such games “deadlocks” or “stalemates”.

68. What worries the author according to the passage?

A.Trying to be winners          B. Developing terrible weapons

  C. Destroying the world           D. Retaliatory strikes

69. The author thinks the present situation is ______.

  A. peaceful B. serious C. encouraging D. astonishing

70. What’s the main idea of the third passage?

  A. There are only winners in our daily lives.

  B. Everyone must win in our daily lives.

  C. We are forced to win in our daily lives.

  D. In our daily lives winners are valued most.

71. The underlined words “kissing your sister” probably has the same meaning as ______.

  A. interesting   B. uninteresting   C. exciting    D. wrong

The English language is changing fast, thanks to the rapid progress of technology. We all have a rapid choice: we can either bury our heads in the sand and spend the rest of our lives wishing Shakespeare were alive and well. Or we can embrace(拥抱)the new English, enter into the spirit of the internet age called Weblish.

“You can’t avoid it , for the simple reason that whenever a new variety of language comes along. it inevitably impacts(冲击)on the language as a whole.” Says Dr. David Crystal. houorary professor of linguistics(语言学家)at the University of Wales in Bangor. Whose book “Language and the internet” has just been published.

The trouble with keeping up with the new English is not so much that there are so many new words but that the old words no longer mean what we thought they did. In the past . if someone said they did not have Windows. You would have to suppose they lived in a cave, These days .it is probably because they use a Mac(which is a computer, not a rain coat ). Spam is as disliked as it ever was , but whereas it once meant an unappetizing(引不起食欲的)canned meat. It now stands for unwanted “junk” email. Spellings are changing, too. Not only is text---messaging playing “hvc wth vrbs’ (havoc(混乱)with verbs).but the conventions of email communication place little emphasis on “perfect speaking”.

Weblish loves to see nouns happily become verbs(“please bookmark this site”).and verbs become nouns (“Send me the download” ).Verbs and prepositions are regularly thrown together to become new nouns or adjectives(dial—up. Logon. Print – on. Pull –down. uplead), while others are created from simply pairing nouns: cyberspace. Etl, emit Internet. hyperlink. metatag, netspeak.

72. The best title of this passage would be ________.

  A. Keep Up with the Latest Weblish

  B. Keep Up with the Latest Development in English

C. Newly invented English Words

D. Technology and English

73. We can infer front the tirst paragraph that ______ .

  A. some people wish Shakespeare were still alive

  B. people may have different attitudes towards weblish

  C. all people welcome weblish

  D. weblish causes fear among people

74.The author thinks the main difficulty for people in keeping up with weblish is that _____

  A. old words take on new meanings

  B. there are so many new words

  C. the technology is changing too fast

  D. weblish words are full of spelling mistakes

75. Dr. David Crystal would probably agree that ________.

  A. people should not accept weblish

  B. weblish can cause misunderstandings among people

C.weblish will destroy the English language

  D. people should know something about weblish

M: Well, I’d like to buy a tennis racket, but there are so many here that I don’t know which one to choose.

W: How well do you play?

M: I’ve played only four times.

W: We have some very nice rackets for beginners. How much do you want to spend?

M: Not too much ,because I don’t know yet whether I’ll actually take up the sport for long.

W: Then we have just the one for you .It’s of good quality and reasonably priced, and it’s especially made for beginners.

M: And how are you doing?

M: How are the other salesmen?

W: Most of them are friendly. But there are two or three who don’t talk to me. And at lunch, when two or three go out together, they never ask me.

M: It’s going to take time .

W: Yea I thing it’s going to take a long tine.

M: Good morning, team. I’m happy to see all of you here this Saturday. As part of your training for the spring track and field events, we’ll spend all the time today on the relay. In a relay race, each member of a team of four runners runs a certain distance before being replaced by another team member. Usually a team begins with the second fastest runner, then the slowest, then the third fastest. The fastest runner is the last. In a relay race, the runners carry it back on, which is passed from one team member to the next The runner stand to the left of the track in a start position, head turned to look at the oncoming runner. When the oncoming runner reaches a certain mark, the waiting runner begins to run. They both run the course for a moment before the baton is passed. The exchange must be made within twenty meters or the team will be taken out of the race. There are four methods of exchange, which I’ll show you.
