第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

A

“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! This broadcast is coming to you today from Downing Stadium. It’s an overcast and drizzly day here in Kenton, but we expect to see lots of fast action out there on the field as the Kenton Warriors meet the Jackson Bears for the first pro game of the season.”

For those of you not too familiar with this great game of soccer, let me tell you briefly how it’s played. There are two teams of 11 players try to maneuver(机动灵巧动作) a round ball into the nets by kicking it with their feet or by using any part of the body except their arms and hands. Sometimes they even bounce it off each other. If the ball goes into the net, the team kicking it scores one point.

A goalie stands in front of each net to keep the other team from scoring. Only goalies are allowed to use their hands. They may grab the ball, take four steps, and throw or kick it to one of their team members. And, believe me, every team member plays to win!

In Europe, if players are seriously injured and taken out of the game, no one can replace them. That is why you will sometimes see people on the field who are playing despite their injuries. But in America, substitutes(替补队员) are allowed.

The field is approximated 120 yards long and 80 yards wide. The game lasts 90 minutes with only a short rest between halves, so the players must be in top physical condition. In an average professional game a player may run a total of nine miles!

Here comes the Kenton team onto the field in their bright green jerseys(紧身套杉) and while shorts with knee-length socks! I don’t think the wet field conditions are going to slow down this winning team one bit! Now the Jackson Bears in gold shorts and white jerseys are moving onto the field. It’s certain to be a close game with these two champion teams.

“Kenton wins the toss! Here’s the kickoff.”

56. Which of these will probably be most descriptive of the Downing Stadium game?

A. Expensive and lengthy B. Humorous and colorful.

57. According to this passage, ________ will be allowed to kick the soccer ball during the game.

A. only the goalies B. all of the soccer player

C. everyone but the injured players D. only the team that wins the toss

58. Soccer players run nine miles _________________.

A. before the rest period B. during an average game

C. when the foul out the game D. when the field condition are very wet

59. According to this passage, what sometimes happens when European players are injured in a game?

A.    They may lose some money.

B.    Other players may take their places.

C.    They are allowed to score with their hands

D. They may go back in the game after a rest.

Safety on the highways is not totally out of our hands. Here are four ways we can protect ourselves when we travel.

1. When your parents said you were safer in a larger car, they were right.

People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Manufacturer of small cars are building in more safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road in the crux of the problem. No matter how good the safety features on s small car, it’s at a serious disadvantage in a crash with a vehicle that is a lot bigger and heavier.

2. Being slammed in to shattering (突然破裂的) glass and metal car parts — or being thrown from the car — cam really do damage to flesh and blood.

That’s why vehicle passengers and drivers should wear safety belts. The safety belts sole purpose in to hold back you if your car has a sudden, violent hit with another vehicle or object — or if it rolls over.

How much do belt help? A lot. A lap — and — shoulder — belt combination can reduce the risk of fatal (致命的) injury by 45percent and the chance of serious injury by 50 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

3. Air bags are important.

More than half of all new cars sold have air bags, and for good reason. Air bags provide additional protection in frontal crashes — the type of crash that kills the most motorists — when passengers and drivers are also wearing lap and shoulder safety belts. Consumers are demanding air bags in the cars they buy. The protection provided by air bags in limited in side or back hits; effective as they are, they can’t take the place of properly fastened safety belts.

4. A vehicle’s head restraint (安全头枕) is not for relaxing your head while you wait at a traffic light.

The purpose of the heads restraint is to protect your neck and head if a car pushes you violently from behind. Without protection , your head can be snapped back, breaking your neck. (This is often known as “whiplash.”) The head restraints of a vehicle may or may not be “adjustable.” There is a tendency with adjustable restraints to leave them in the lowest position, which protects only short people. If your head restrain is adjustable, it should be set so it can fully support your head and neck in a crash.

64. This article is primarily about ________.

Chris Moen, 16, suffers from a genetic disease that doctors say will leave him blind by age 30. It is the same disease, retinitis pigmen-tosa(一种视网膜疾病), that destroys the retinas of one every 3,000 children and young adults in the United States, finally leaving them fully or party blind.

Chris has an advantage over most of them. He’s working on his own cure. Chris, who lives in Glen Mills, near Philadelphia, has volunteered in a laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania’s Scheie Eye Institute. “I can’t ask for more than this,” he said. “I really want to find a cure. I don’t want my children or their children to go through what I might have to.”

Even more important, Chris and his mother ,Maria, helped persuade more than 60 members of the extended family to cooperate with researchers at Penn, who are trying to find ways to cure the disease. Doctors think treatment or even a cure could be found in 10 years, or maybe 15.

“Having such a huge family to study is a good time,” said Jean Bennett who is heading the research.

On a more personal level, the efforts by Chris and his parents have ended years of refuse in their extended family about a disease that has left at least 19 members blind.

“Most of my extended family didn’t talk about it,” Chris said. “It was a sad subject. They just denied(否认) it. We didn’t even tell my grandparents that I had it until four years ago because we were afraid how they’d react.”

Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of diseases which is passed from generation to generation. The pressure of retinitis pigmentosa that runs through the Moen family mainly affects men and boys; women can suffer from it as well, doctors say.

When Chris was 2, doctor diagnosed(诊断) the disease. His parents waited until junior high school to tell him. They encouraged him to do a report on retinitis pigmentosa for science class. Then they broke the news.

The family told few outsiders.

“When there is no treatment and there is no cure, it’s just a cery anxious feeling,” said Maria Moen. “You just don’t talk about it. You’d like it to go away, but it won’t.”

Chris, a straight-A student, will soon begin his senior year in high school. He will work in the lab at Penn when he can, continue to get straight A’s, wrestle on the varsity team, and let his friends lend him by the arm in the dark, where his vision is already all but gone.

72. Which of these questions in NOT answered in the article?

A.    How does Chris feel about having this disease?

B.    When do doctors hope to find a cure for retinitis pigmentosa?

C.    What does Chris plan to do after he finishes high school?

D. Why do some people have retinitis pigmentosa?

73. Which statement is TURE based on the information in the article?

A.    Chris is the only person in his family who has retinitis pigmentosa.

B.    Retinitis pigmentosa affects young children only.

C.    Retinitis pigmentosa is passed from one generation to the next.

D. Only Chris and his mother have retinitis pigmentosa.

74. It can be inferred from this article that Chris Moen _____________.

A. is angry with his family B. is hard-working person

C. plan to be a scientist        D. always feels disappointed

75. The Moen family didn’t want to talk about the disease because _______________.

A.    they wanted to get more help from others.

B.    they were afraid of being looked down upon.

C.    they felt too shy to be known with such a disease.

D. they warried about Chris’ being refused by the school.

The people of La Gomera can carry on long-distance conversation by whistling. For ordinary conversation they speak Spanish. But when they need to speak over a distance, and ordinary speech.

La Gomera is very mountainous. Because of the island’s small size, walking from one place to another may be slow and difficult. That is why the silbo is so useful to the islanders there. A message can easily be whistled over a couple over a couple of miles, while to travel the same distance on foot might take an hour.

A good whistler can be heard and understood five miles away. His whistling can be heard even farther away when there is little or no wind. I was informed that the record is nine miles. Another who has heard a first-class whistler will agree that this figure is quite possible.

A whistle doesn’t have all the changes of tone(音调). To achieve changes, the whistler tries to perform the same movements with his teeth, mouth, tongue, and throat that he would use if he were actually talking. Of course, he cannot move his lips during the whistling ,so there is some difference. However, it is close enough. Each whistler has his own style of whistling just as you can recognize him by the way he spoken. Anything that ca be said in Spanish language has such a simple sound system. The silbo would not wotk nearly so well with English.
