The measure of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

                                     ——Thomas Macaulay

Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs Nanette O’Neill gave a maths 31  to our class. When the papers were 32  she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the same mistakes throughout the test.

There is nothing really new about 33  in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs O’Neill  34  even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to  35  after class. I was one of the twelve.

Mrs O’Neill asked 36  questions, and she didn’t scold(责备) us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the 37  words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to 38  these words into our exercise-books one hundred times.

I don’t 39  about the other eleven boys. Speaking for myself I can say: it was the most important single 40  of my life. Thirty years after being 41  to Macaulay’s words, they 42  seem to me the best yardstick(准绳), because they give us a 43  to measure ourselves rather than others.

44   of us are asked to make 45  decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called on daily to make a great many personal decisions.  46  the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket  47  turned over to the policeman? Should the  48 change received at the store be forgotten or  49 ?  Nobody will know except you. But you have to live with yourself, and it is always  50   to live with someone you respect.

As one comes to some crossroads(十字路口), one sees a sign which says that drivers have to stop when they come to the main road ahead. At other crossroads, drivers have to go slow, but they don’t have to stop ( unless, of course, there is something coming along the main road ); and at still others, they do not have either to stop or to go slow, because they are themselves on the main road.

Mr. Williams, who was always a very careful driver, was driving home from work one evening when he came to a crossroad. It had a “SLOW” sign, so he slowed down(减速) when he came to the main road, looked both ways to see that nothing was coming, and then drove across without stopping.

At once he heard a policeman calling, so he drove to the side of the road and stopped. A policeman walked over to him with a notebook and a pencil in his hand and said, “You didn’t stop at that crossing.”

“But the sign there doesn’t say “STOP”, answered Williams. “It just says ‘SLOW’, and I did go slow.”

The policeman looked around him, and a look of surprise came over his face. Then he put his notebook and pencil away, saying, “Well, I’m in the wrong street!”

But Saturday morning was bright and clear when I went to the station to meet Aunt Clara. It was a great trouble to push three of the boys, together with their things, into the back of the car. The youngest sat in the front, with Clara and me.

My wife was waiting at the gate for us. As soon as we got out of the car, my wife said to David, the eldest boy, “I didn’t see any tents.”

“The tents!” cried Aunt Clara. “My God! We left them in the house.

Sunday                       Fine

I got up very early this morning because my classmates and I would go to visit the Baidi Temple. We took a bus to the foot of the hill, and then we began to climb on foot. On the way to the top, I happened to pick up a bag. When I opened it, I found in it there was a camera and over 400 yuan and a check for 2000 dollars. At once we decided to hand it to the police, and with the help of the police we found the owner, Mrs. Smith, an American woman. She felt very grateful and she praised us for doing such a good deed. We were very happy to have helped others.
