While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, Oregon, I had an experience which occurred merely two feet away from me.

Trying to locate my friend among the passengers deplaning through the jet way, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.

First he kissed his three children one by one and said, “It’s nice to see you. I missed you so much!” Then he hugged his wife, “I’ve saved the best for last!” giving her the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. They stared at each other’s eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands. For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn’t possibly be.

Full of admiration, I asked, “Wow! How long have you two been married?” “Being together for fourteen years total, married twelve of those.” He replied, without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife’s face. “Well, then, how long have you been away?” I asked. “Two whole days!” “Two days?” I was stunned. By the intensity of the greeting, I had assumed he’d been gone for at least several weeks --- if not months. I knew my expression betrayed me, so I turned away my eyes and murmured offhandedly, “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after so long!”

The man suddenly stopped smiling and looked me straight in the eye. With forcefulness he told me something that left me a different person. “Don’t hope, friend…decide!” Then he smiled again, shook my hand and said, “God bless!”

With that, he and his family turned and strode away together.

I was still watching that exceptional man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked, “What are you looking at?” Without hesitation, and with a curious sense of certainty, I replied, “My future!”

BEIJING — Hollywood director Spielberg’s decision to quit the Beijing Olympics over the Darfur Crisis (达尔富尔危机) is drawing anger and criticism from China’s media and the Chinese public.

Last week, the American director withdrew from his role as an artistic adviser to the opening and closing ceremonies of the Summer Games, accusing China of not doing enough to press for peace in the troubled Sudanese region.

Officially, the Chinese government has not directly criticized Spielberg by name, expressing only “regret” over his decision. But the media and the public have been far less restrained (克制).

“A certain Western director was very naive (幼稚的) and made an unreasonable decision on the Beijing Olympics. This is perhaps because of his unique Hollywood characteristics,” said a front-page editorial (社论) Wednesday in the overseas edition of the People’s Daily. “He is not qualified to blame China because he knows nothing about the great efforts the Chinese government has made on Darfur.”

An editorial in the China Youth Daily was equally severe in its wording. “This film director is famous for his science fiction. But now it seems that he lives in a world of science fiction and he can’t distinguish a dream from reality.” it said.

China is believed to have influence over Sudanese leaders because it buys two-thirds of Sudan’s oil exports. China also sells weapons to the Islamic government and defends it in the United Nations.

Over 200,000 people have died in Darfur in a conflict between rebels (造反者) and government forces.

The issue also has exploded on the Internet, where many Chinese have been quick to add their criticism of Spielberg.

“We should have never invited him at first,” said one person on sina.com. “Spielberg used the sacred Olympics as a tool. There are so many simpler or more complicated issues than the Darfur issue in the world,” another person said. “I rarely heard him say anything.”

But the recent storm of international criticism has caused China to take some steps.

In an interview published Wednesday, its special envoy (特使) to Darfur said Western countries should have helped to advance the peace process by pressuring rebel leaders to take part in peace talks. “Western powers can use more positive influence on those rebel leaders because many of them live in Western capitals.” Envoy Liu Guijin was quoted as saying in the China Daily newspaper. Abdel Wahid Nur, one of the most influential rebel leaders, lives in France.

Liu will be making his fourth visit to Darfur later this month. In a telephone call Tuesday to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Premier Wen Jiabao detailed China’s efforts to establish peace in Darfur.

63. What excuse did Spielberg give for quitting the Beijing Olympic Games?

A. China isn’t qualified to hold the Olympic Games.

B. China provides weapons to Sudan and causes trouble in the region.

C. China exports two-thirds of oil to Sudan.

D. China doesn’t do as much as it can to help bring peace to Sudan.

64. Which of the following is NOT criticism from the Chinese media and public on Spielberg’s

decision?

A. Spielberg uses the Olympics as a tool for political purposes.

B. Spielberg knows nothing about the great efforts China has made on Darfur.

C. Spielberg knows little about films and less about politics.

D. Spielberg is naive and can not tell a dream from reality.

65. The Chinese government has done all the following in response to the Spielberg issue EXCEPT that __________.

A. it indirectly criticized Spielberg without mentioning his name

B. it criticized western powers for not doing enough to deal with the crisis

C. it made public on newspapers its efforts to establish peace in Darfur

D. it is going to send its envoy to Darfur on another visit

66. One of the reasons why China is thought to have great influence over the Sudanese leaders is that __________.

A. China has more positive influence on those rebel leaders

B. China buys weapons from the Islamic government

C. China opposes Sudan in the United Nations

D. China buys two-thirds of the country’s oil exports

D

If two scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory are correct, people will still be driving gasoline-powered cars 50 years from now, giving out heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere — and yet that carbon dioxide will not contribute to global warming.

In a proposal by two scientists, vehicle emissions (排放) would no longer contribute to global warming. The scientists, F. Jeffrey Martin and William L. Kubic Jr., are proposing a concept, which they have named Green Freedom, for removing carbon dioxide from the air and turning it back into gasoline.

The idea is simple. Air would be blown over a liquid solution (溶液) of potassium carbonate, which would absorb the carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide would then be put to chemical reactions that would turn it into fuel: gasoline or jet fuel.

This process could change carbon dioxide from an unwanted, climate-changing pollutant into a vast resource for renewable fuels. The cycle — equal amounts of carbon dioxide produced and removed — would mean that cars, trucks and airplanes using the synthetic (合成的) fuels would no longer be contributing to global warming.

Although they have not yet built a synthetic fuel factory, or even a small model, the scientists say it is all based on existing technology. “Everything in the concept has been built, is operating or has a close cousin that is operating,” Dr. Martin said.

The Los Alamos proposal does not go against any laws of physics, and other scientists who have independently suggested similar ideas. Dr. Martin said he and Dr. Kubic had worked out their concept in more detail than previous proposals.

There is, however, a major fact that explains why no one has built a carbon-dioxide-to-gasoline factory: it requires a great deal of energy.

According to their analysis, their concept, which would cost about $5 billion to build, could produce gasoline at an operating cost of $1.40 a gallon and would turn economically practical when the price at the pump hits $4.60 a gallon.

Other scientists said the Los Alamos proposal perhaps looked promising but could not evaluate it fully because the details had not been published.

“It’s definitely worth pursuing,” said Martin I. Hoffert, a professor of physics at New York University. “It’s not that new an idea. It has a couple of pieces to it that are interesting.”

67. What is the idea of the project being discussed in the article?

A. Recycling the carbon dioxide from cars back into gasoline.

B. Create a new gasoline that gives off very little carbon dioxide.

C. Using a special liquid solution to absorb carbon dioxide from cars.

D. Build synthetic fuel factories to remove carbon dioxide from the air.

68. What’s the name given to the new concept?

A. Synthetic Fuel. B. Green Freedom.

C. Renewable Fuel. D. Carbon-dioxide-to-gasoline Factory.

69. Which of the following is NOT one of the benefits of this new concept as suggested in the article?

A. Reduction of global warming. B. Cheaper gasoline for cars.

C. Longer life of cars.         C. Less pollution of the atmosphere.

70. What’s the biggest problem in realizing the concept according to the report?

A. Shortage of starting funds.

B. Immature technology involved.

C. All previous similar attempts have failed.

D. The use of too much energy in running the fuel factory.

第II卷 非选择题 (共35分)

第四部分: 任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注意:每空格只填一个单词。

Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?

In this fast-paced world, many people’s beliefs about what is right or wrong are going through major changes. While people traditionally prioritize (优先) caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.

Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.

In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned(指责) then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.

Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer, either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually(相互) beneficial relationship.

In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.
