Good health is the most valuable thing in the world. When you’ve got it, you never think about it. When you haven’t got it, you think about it all the time. Our biggest enemies are not terrible diseases and so on. We are our own biggest enemies because we sometimes destroy our own good health. Some of us eat too much, drink too much and smoke too much. And though our reason tells us we should control ourselves, we find it difficult. The fact is that most human beings need stimulation(刺激). Who doesn’t enjoy a drink after a busy day? Only a smoker knows the pleasure of a cigarette with a cup of coffee.
The danger is when these innocent pleasures run our lives and so destroy our health. When you find yourself eating between meals or eating too much rich food, when you can only keep yourself going by taking frequent(频繁的) drinks or by smoking one cigarette after another, then it’s time to stop and think what you might be doing to yourself. The funny thing is that when we don’t control ourselves, simple pleasures are no longer simple pleasures.
All right, I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably saying, “It’s easy to say, but I can’t help myself. I need that extra bit of food, that extra drink, that extra cigarette. Life has so many pleasures that I can’t do without them.” But I’m saying you can help yourself. Not only that, you must help yourself. Because if you don’t help yourself, no one else can. So be your own best friend.
56. The underlined word “innocent”(in Paragraph 2) means ________.
A. not having done something wrong B. exciting or cheering
C. not having much experience D. not expected to cause harm
57. This passage is mainly about ________.
A. terrible diseases and so on
B. enjoying pleasures after a busy day
C. the difficulty of controlling ourselves
D. the danger of too much drinking, smoking and eating
58. “I can’t help myself” means ____________.
A. I can’t do it myself B. I must ask someone to help
C. I can’t control myself D. Do help me, please

Pennsylvania—When Connie Beck and her husband awoke to strange noises last weekend, they thought high winds were rattling(便发出响声) their home.
What they found was even more unexpected: A deer was taking a bubble(泡沫) bath in their bathtub.
“I wasn’t exactly dressed for company,” Mrs. Beck said. “We were just waking up.”
The deer burst through the front door early on Saturday, ran past the couple’s bedroom and into the bathroom.
Somehow he managed to turn on the water in the bathtub and knock over a bottle of bubble bath into the bathtub.
He then got himself into the bubbly water.
“You could hear the water running over the kicking,” Beck said.
The Becks called State Game Commission officials, who arrived with tranquilizers(镇静剂) and a lot of laughter.
“A guy said, ‘There’s nothing wrong… he’s just in there taking a bubble bath,’” Mrs. Beck said.
The animal was soon brought under control, removed from the house and released.
“He was unharmed except for a little cut above the eye,” said Mrs. Beck. “We were also fortunate. There wasn’t much damage, except for the front door, some marks on the tub, and a few hoof(蹄) prints on the floor.”

American hunger for cheese was reduced a bit when consumers(消费者) traveled and ate out less following the year of 2001. Now their appetite(胃口) is back and they are eating more cheese than ever.
Most of the demand is being fed by household suppliers, and California’s mega-dairies(大制酪场) are growing so fast that experts expect the state to overtake Wisconsin in cheese production within two years. California is already the nation’s leading milk producer, and with the help of cheese makers like Hilmar Cheese Company—the largest in North America—the state has doubled its cheese production in the last ten years.
In 1995, California made 70 varieties of cheese. Now there are 250 types of cheese coming out of the state. One out of every 10 pounds of cheese eaten is a higher-quality, value-added cheese. Ten years ago, only one in 15 pounds of cheese eaten was a specialty. The vast majority is common cheese, but Americans are also eating much more cheese.
It is good news for California’s dairies(牛奶场). By pooling their resources, farmers could turn some of the high-protein, high-fat milk coming from their brown cows into cheese, a value-added product that would bring in a little extra cash. When they started the Hilmar Cheese Company in 1984, the 12 families together brought in 250,000 pounds of milk a day—a drop in a bucket for a company that now processes(加工) 10 million pounds of milk a day from more than 270 producers—about 10 percent of all the milk produced in California.
Cheese has great healthful value, and brings calcium(钙) back into diets. But it also makes food taste better, making it easier to eat too much. “It’s terrible that we’re eating more cheese, but bottom line, all calories count,” said Stern, who also suggests people should try to eat cheese in slightly different ways, with pears or apple slices—expanding their diets.
63. The passage is written to tell us _______.
A. dairies are developing very fast
B. Americans eat more cheese than ever
C. how dairies are developing in America
D. cheese is developing towards more varieties
64. When the Hilmar Cheese Company was opened, it _______.
A. was the largest company producing cheese
B. made 70 varieties of cheese
C. was supplied with milk by 12 producers
D. was made up of 12 families then
65. The underlined word “It” (in Paragraph 4) refers to the fact that ______.
A. Americans are eating more and more cheese
B. cheese has more varieties
C. cheese has great healthful value
D. California is the nation’s leading milk producer
66. In the opinion of Stern, ______.
A. the more we eat cheese, the better we’ll become
B. Americans are eating too much cheese
C. more ways of eating cheese should be developed
D. Americans should not eat cheese any longer

A number of times Rosemary edged closer to Gordon, meaning to take his arm, but he edged away from her. She thought that she has offended(冒犯) him deeply, and that he was disappointed because she had pushed him away. She would have apologized if he had given her half a chance. But as a matter of fact, he was scarcely thinking of this any longer. It was the money business that was troubling him now. And the fact was that he would soon have to confess it. What nonsense it made of all he had said! There he was behaving like a man of experience, and the next moment turning round and asking her for money! Presently she stopped him, and swung him round to face her. “Gordon, why won’t you speak to me?” she said. “Are you still angry with me for what happened just now?”
“No, I was never angry with you. You’re not to blame. Something else has been worrying me all the way along. I’ve only eight pence left. I had just enough money for today when we started out, but that dinner bill upset everything. Can you lend me some money?”
Rosemary was amazed. “What does it matter if you’ve only eight pence left? How can you let yourself be worried by a thing like that? As though I objected to lending you money, aren’t always telling you that I want to pay for myself when we go out together?”
“Yes, and you know how I hate you paying.”
“Oh, how silly you are,” she said. “Do you think there’s anything to be ashamed of in having no money?”
Gordon’s face went bright pink. “Of course there is! It’s the only thing in the world there is to be ashamed of. I can’t be a complete human being—I don’t feel a human being—unless I’ve got money in my pocket.”
67. What gave Rosemary the idea that she had hurt Gordon’s feelings deeply?
A. He didn’t hold her arm.
B. He pushed her away when she tried to take his arm.
C. He didn’t say he was sorry.

Youngsters at Tarkington elementary(小学) started their first day of classes at a school where flowering plants grow on the roof. It’s one of the nation’s small but growing number of environmentally-friendly schools, a standout because it sits in a major city better known for towers of steel and concrete.
Supporters hope Tarkington elementary will bring the idea of environmentally-friendly urban buildings into the mainstream.
Compared to other Chicago buildings, Tarkington has a living green roof planted atop the gymnasium. It is a garden of short, self-sustaining flowering plants that don’t need much water and can stand Chicago’s weather. If students are lucky, they might even see birds nesting(筑巢) there.
The insulation(隔离) provided by the soil and vegetation will help keep the building warm in winter and cool in summer. Rainwater soaking into the soil will be piped to a nearby lake. The school is also designed to use 30% less water than expected for a building of its size and get half of its electricity from renewable resources, and it has a reflective(反光的) coating to reduce the amount of heat getting in.
Aside from savings on costs of water and energy, such schools are exciting for what they can do for students. It’s believed that the air quality in a “green” building is better than other schools, and that students won’t be sick out as much and may perform better. In addition, the green roof will offer hands-on lessons on life cycles and plant life.
Tarkington is popular with people from all walks of life, especially the students and their parents.
72. The underlined word “It” (in Paragraph 3) refers to __________.
73. As far as the temperature is concerned, staying in the building of Tarkington, you will feel __________.
74. According to the passage, what can we infer about the number of the environmentally-friendly schools in the future?
75. Which would be the best title for the passage, “Life in a green school”, “Tarkington—school of the future” or “Green school with ‘living roof’”?

Now, on behalf of our group I’d like to give a brief summary of our discussion. The main advantage of using public transportation is that its ticket is cheap and generally it’s much better for the environment, because you are only using one vehicle instead of many. Also, public transportation reduces traffic jams. And you don’t have to worry about parking and all that kind of things.
The big disadvantage is that you have to wait, sometimes even a long time. It’s much more convenient to just jump in your own car and take off. Still, you have to follow a route and you have no flexibility with public transportation. Sometimes it can be very uncomfortable, especially during rush hours.
Personally, I prefer private cars, for I enjoy the feeling while driving.
