阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

One of the tallest and most interesting animals is the giraffe. Male giraffes are usually about six meters tall. Half of the giraffe's height comes from its neck, which is longer than its legs.

A giraffe has big brown eyes which are protected by very thick lashes. Since it lives in parts of Africa which are usually dry with a great deal of dust, the lashes are an important source of protection. It can also cover its nose in order to protect it. It has brown spots on the skin and this coloring helps protect the giraffe. The giraffe also has two short horns on its head.

Like the camel, the giraffe can go a long time without drinking water. One source of water is the leaves which the giraffe eats from trees. Since it is so tall, the giraffe can reach the tender leaves at the top of a tree.

Giraffes usually live in small groups and often feed with other animals. A baby giraffe is two meters tall at birth. It can stand up by itself within a few minutes and can run well in about two days.

Giraffes have two methods of self-protection. If something frightens an adult giraffe, it can run away at about fifty kilometers per hour or stay to fight with its strong legs.

56.The word “giraffe” means ______.

A.骆驼        B.长颈鹿 C驼鸟 D.羚羊

Monica Lewinsky, whose affair with President Clinton was at the center of a scandal(丑闻) that led to his impeachment(弹劾) by the U.S. House of Representatives last year, was slightly injured Sunday when her sports car overturned on a Southern California highway, police said.

The former White House intern(实习生) overturned a blue Ford Explorer shortly after 1 p.m. on Highway 101 south of California, about 65 miles north of Los Angeles, a dispatcher(调度员) for the California Highway Patrol said.

“She reached across to remove something from her purse and realized she was too close to a motor home(旅宿汽车) in front of her. She turned suddenly to the left to avoid an accident with the motor home and lost control of the car,” the dispatcher said.

“She began to slide sideways to the left…and crossed the center divider. The car overturned on to its left side,” the dispatcher said.

“Lewinsky, 26, was taken to the Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, California, where she was treated for slight cuts to her left arm,” the dispatcher said.

Her car was damaged.

She left with family members after being treated, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Road conditions at the time of the accident were clear, the California Highway Patrol dispatcher said, adding that Lewinsky was traveling at an “unknown rate of speed”.

Lewinsky was alone and no other cars, the official added.

The Ford explorer was taken away after the accident, the dispatcher said, describing the car as “undriveable”.

A newspaper would report the accident but it was unclear if police would investigate it further because no other vehicles or people were involved, the dispatcher said.

I found myself facing a dry-cleaning store which had once been one of the best restaurants in New York. On Sundays the old man would take my mother and me for dinner. There had been a balcony(阳台) where a baker in a tall white hat baked fresh bread, and whenever a customer entered, the baker would look down and put in the fresh batch(一炉). I could smell the bread through the smell of cleaning liquid on Lenoz Avenue. I could see the manager who always sat down with us while we ate. He had some disease, I suppose, because the right side of his face was swollen(肿大的) out like a balloon, but he always wore a hard wing collar and a white tie, and never seemed sick.

A Negro(黑人) was looking through the store window at me. For a moment I wanted very much to go and tell him what I remembered, to describe this avenue when no rubbish cans were on the street, when the Daimlers and Minervas and Fords had cruised by, and the policeman on the corner threw back the ball when it got through the outfield on 114th Street.

I did not go into the store, nor even toward our house. Any desire I had for anything had lost. I went down town instead and sat in my room, trying to read.

62.The author's purpose in the passage is to ______.

Moon landing. The computer chip. Genetic engineering. The artificial heart. The achievements of U.S. scientists are known and admired throughout the world. But whether American highest position in research and technology will continue into the 21st century is far from certain. Thirty -two years after the Russians sent up Sputnik setting off a hot race to produce more and better U.S. physicists, the scientific pipeline is drying up. The reason for this crisis(危机): American science education is in disorder.

In an Educational Testing Service study of five countries and four Canadian provinces, American 13-year-olds graded last in math and nearly last in science.

How did America, birthplace of Thomas Edison and Wright brothers come to such a dangerous situation? One reason is lack of enough financial support for science education. After Sputnik, funding(基金) for the National Science Foundation, the leading U.S. founder of scientific research, shot up from $18 million to $130 million. By 1982 financing for NSF's education had fellen rapidly to zero.

To be sure, changeable funding is only one reason why U.S. scientists are becoming a scarce commodity(稀有商品). The image of scientists is less lustrous than it was in the '50s and '60s, when men and women in lab coats were seen as national heroes helping the U.S. beat the Russians to the moon. Today, the country's brightest desire is to be bankers and lawyers, not chemists or rocket designers.

66.From the passage, we can know that the computer chip, genetic engineering are ______.

A.examples of American scientific achievements B.names of modern technology

C.seen everywhere throughout the world     D.obtained by Russia

67.America is losing its highest position in research and technology because ______.

A.American students are flowing to Canada

B.the scientific pipeline is drying up

C.Thomas Edison and Wright brothers had died

D.the lack of financial support and lower social position of scientists

68.According to the passage Sputnik is ______.

A.a research project of National Science Foundation

B.the name of an education department

C.a scientific achievement of Russia

D.a scarce commodity

69.The word “lustrous” in the last paragraph can be replaced by ______.

A.important      B.shining C.smart      D.shocking

70.The main idea of the passage is that ______.

A.America's leading position in scientific research is in danger

B.America needs more funding in scientific research

C.the National Science Foundation needs financial support

D.American students are not good in science

Byrne turned the key in the heavy lock and put it calmly in his pocket. He did so much more from caution(谨慎) than from any kind of fear. This was the only entrance to the house, and he did not mean to be surprised by any danger from outside. He wondered if Tom Corbin had been as cautious the night before. Though Tom would be away for at least three days, Byrne had a strange feeling of his nearness. In the stillness he seemed to hear Tom's voice. He looked round quickly, for the tricks of hearing are the most realistic of all. But there were only the women. It seemed impossible that Tom should not be there.

The girl, carrying a smoky oil lamp, led Byrne upstairs. He threw open one after another the doors along the passage. At this, the girl stopped and raised the lamp in each doorway, staring at him meanwhile. Satisfied he was the only guest, Byrne came to the last door, which the girl threw open herself.

“You sleep here, sir,” she said, giving him the lamp. “Your friend slept here too. It's our most comfortable bed.”

“Good night, miss,” he said politely.

Her lips moved in reply, but he did not catch the words. Her eyes never for a moment left his face. He stepped in, and as he turned to close the door she was still standing there motionless. He paused, and in the silence he thought he again heard the sound of Tom's voice. The sound terrified him now, not only because it seemed much nearer but also because he imagined a note of warning in it.

71.Why did Byrne take the key with him?

A.To let Tom in, when he returned.

B.Because he was afraid of what was going to happen.

C.To stop any enemy being let into the house.

D.Because he did not want the women to escape.

72.We know from the passage that Tom Corbin ______.

A.had left the house three days before

B.had felt quite as suspicious(有疑心的) as Byrne was

C.had stayed in the house for three days

D.had slept in the house the night before

73.Why did Byrne look inside each room?

A.He wanted to choose the best room for himself.

B.He was looking for Tom Corbin.

C.The girl wanted him to examine each of the rooms.

D.He wished to make sure there was no one inside.

74.Although Byrne politely wished the girl good night ______.

A.she gave him a rude answer      B.she did not leave him

C.she refused to look at him       D.she said nothing to him

75.What made Byrne very frightened?

A.The strangeness of the place. B.Being alone, at the end of the passage.

书面表达

On a nice day of March 15th, we went a sight-seeing that we had long expected. Early in the morning, we left at 6:00 on our school bus, arriving at East Lake Park three hours later.

Soon after we jumped off the bus we organized a mountain-climbing contest and a boat-rowing race as we had planned. By 12:00 we entered a snack-bar and ate a quick lunch in order to save time. It was the afternoon activities that made us even more excited: walking around the lake to enjoy the beautiful sight, visiting the Sea World and taking photos.

Never had we had such a good time. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we didn't remember the time to return until 5:00. We were forced, however, to say goodbye to so unforgettable a scenic spot.
