The bicycle is the common sight in our daily life, as a great many Chinese use one every day. But you may not know its role in strengthening international relations, as it did in the case of US President George W. Bush's visit to China last November.

President Bush arrived in Beijing on November 19, 2005 after he finished the APEC meeting in South Korea. He met with Chinese top leaders and achieved agreements on trade, Taiwan issue and more.

Although Bush' s trip was short as 40 hours, he managed to spare a moment to do some cycling. On November 20, he rode up and down a steep path at Laoshan Olympic Mountain Bike Course in Beijing's suburbs.

Six young Chinese cyclists accompanied the president, who was dressed in a Chinese training uniform with the "Beijing 2008" logo (标志). He did not go along the arranged route and chose a more zigzag(曲折的) hiking path.

"How do you say, 'take it easy on the old man' ?" Bush joked to his partners before setting out.

"Compared with my bike path on the Crawford ranch (农场) , this one is greater and really difficult," said Bush when his 45-minute ride ended. He said he will come to Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games.

This is not Bush's first cycle ride in Beijing. In 1975 at the age of 29, he visited the Chinese capital for the first time, when his father was head of the US liaison office (联络处) in Beijing, which Bush described as "fantastic".

However, observers said Bush's ride is much more than just his favorite pastime. It expressed friendliness with people in China, where the bicycle is an important part of life and culture.

According to the Washington Post, one of the major newspapers in the US, this was a specially arranged activity by the US Government, for they want to send the Chinese a sign of friendship. "The president is by no means hostile (有敌意的) to China," it said.

The Spring Festival is coming, which is the season for family reunions, but are grandma and grandpa ready? According to the recent survey, each year over 2.5 million children under five years of age suffer injures in the home. In this same age group, 17 percent are caused by taking the oral prescription (^h^f) drugs belonging to a grandparent, reports the National Consumer Product Safety Commission.

To make a place safe to the kids, you should lock medicine chests and cabinets that contain household chemicals. Move hot foods, glassware and knives to the back of the kitchen counters. Remove sharp objects from the bathroom and lower the waterheater temperature to 50°C.

Keep all beds away from windows. Remove knickknacks (小饰物) from bedside tables, especially during the time when you take a short rest. Provide a playpen, doorway gate, safe toys, and childproof covers for electrical outlets. Post a list of emergency numbers by the telephone.

Finally, before the grandchildren arrive, it' s a good idea to get down on your hands and knees in each room, at child' s-eye level, to see if there is anything dangerous within reach. After they arrive, the best preventive measure is to keep an eye on the kids all the time.

Traveling in Vietnam was like visiting a mysterious neighbor. You have lived next door to each other for years but knew very little about what happened on the other side of the fence.

I traveled there last August. A simple 180-kilometer trip from a Chinese border town to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, took an adventurous eight hours. That's because the country still doesn't have a modem expressway system. The major passage going through the peninsula (半岛) is only a two-way roads. Also, many areas are mountainous.

Vietnamese drivers are impatient and fearless. They compete with each other at full speed no matter how scared the passengers feel.

When the bus jolted (颠簸) us violently for the third time, the driver made a joke to make us feel better. "See, this is just a gift Vietnamese people give you, a free massage (按摩) service."

It was midnight when I reached the hotel. Switching on the television, I was amazed by something: All the characters in the TV dramas spoke in the same voice.

At present, modem dramas and historical Chinese dramas are popular with the Vietnamese. But it seemed they didn't have enough money to dub (给—配音) all these programs. So, the same boring woman would appear behind every drama to speak for the roles.

The next morning when I opened the window, I found myself in a huge "garden". The buildings in the streets were dressed in all kinds of colors you can imagine. Vietnamese residents are allowed to paint their houses as they like, each of which was different. The great majority of colors brought the city alive.

67. Vietnam is _____.

A. an neighboring country of China B. a country which has a long fence between China

C. a mysterious neighbor of the author D. a country which the author knew quite a little

68. The reasons why the trip to Hanoi was considered to be adventurous are the following EXCEPT

A. the country still doesn't have a modem expressway system

B. many areas in the country are mountainous

C. the major passage goes through the peninsula

D. Vietnamese drivers are impatient and fearless

69. It can be inferred from the text that _____.

A. Vietnamese drivers compete with each other to make passengers scared

B. the author was offered a free massage service during the bus tour

C. all the characters in the TV dramas spoke Vietnamese

D. With enough money, foreign TV programs would be more popular in Vietnam

70. What impressed the author great next morning was _____.

A. a huge garden B. colors of the buildings C. streets in Hanoi D. local residents

The school lunch program has been considered to be a part of a school's education program in America. But now the alarm over childhood obesity (肥胖) throughout the country is well documented and the need to prevent it cannot be overstated (夸大).

Teaching students about what makes a sound diet and healthier eating habits is one way public schools can at least reduce some epidemics (传染病). School lunch programs require strict nutritional guidelines in regard to the food served to children. At the same time, school food service directors must keep costs down as much as possible so that meals remain affordable.

It can be a little challenging that the school lunch program has always connected with nutritional meals for the children. It just seems there's more in the media about it now because of all the attention to obesity. In some states exists a policy that bans to provide such foods as hot dogs and candy bars for school lunches entirely. Some suggest that compromise position (折中立场) might be more palatable to all concerned.

Although the ideal way out would be that only healthy food would be provided, it is reasonable to make changes in that direction rather than to go from one extreme to another. Others see a need to ease in nutritional requirements. Going with organic food, for example, surely would improve the nutritional quality of school lunches, but who knows what might be lost in the process of cooking.

If you did go all-organic, it would cost more than it would to produce school lunch. Anyway, there are certainly ways of improving meal quality without going overboard (过分苛求).

71. Which of the following is NOT true according to the first two paragraphs? ______.

A. More and more children in the USA became overweight

B. To inform students of healthier diets and eating habits can reduce some epidemics

C. School lunch requires strict nutritional guidelines

D. School meals are not as affordable as before

72. School lunch programs face challenge mainly because ______.

A. Media pays more attention to obesity

B. Students like to have hot dogs and candy bars

C. They have always connected with nutritional meals for the children

D. School food service directors must keep costs down as often as possible

73. The underlined word "palatable" in the third paragraph probably means ______.

A. acceptable B. meaningful C. complete D. serious

74. The author believes that ______.

A. Going all with organic food can reduce the cost of school lunch

B. To provide organic food is the best way to improve meal quality

C. People sometimes are too strict with the nutritional quality of school lunches

D. People pay no attention to nutritional requirements of the food served to children

75. What is probably the best title for the article? ______.

A. Nutritional Guidelines       B. School Lunch Programs

C. Childhood Obesity D. Organic Food
