Steve and Yaser first met in their chemistry class at an American university. Yaser was an international student from Jordan. He was excited to get to know an American. He wanted to learn more about American culture. Yaser hoped that he and Steve would become good friends.
At first, Steve seemed very friendly. He always greeted Yaser warmly before class. Sometimes he offered to study with Yaser. He even invited Yaser to eat lunch with him. But after the term was over, Steve seemed more distant. The two former classmates didn't see each other very much at school. One day Yaser decided to call Steve. Steve didn't seem very interested in talking to him.Yaser was hurt by Steve's change of attitude. “Steve said we were friends,” Yaser complained. “And I thought friends were friends forever.”
Yaser is a little confused. He is an outsider to American culture. He doesn't understand the way Americans view friendship. Americans use the word “friend” in a very general way. They may call both casual acquaintances(偶然相识者) and close companions “friends”. Americans have school friends, work friends, sports friends, and neighbourhood friends. These friendships are based on common interests. When the shared activity ends, the friendship may fade. Now Steve and Yaser
are no longer classmates. Their friendship has changed.
In some cultures friendship means a strong life-long bond(关系) between two people. In these cultures friendships develop slowly, since they are built to last. American society is one of rapid changes. Studies show that one out of five American families moves every year. American friendships develop quickly, and they may change just as quickly.
56.Yaser felt hurt mainly because ______.
A.Steve was now an enemy to him
B.he didn't quite understand American friendship
C.Steve was not polite to him
D.he would have to say goodbye to Steve soon
57.The misunderstanding between them is mainly caused by ______.
A.Steve's change of attitude
B.difference of view on friendship between the two cultures
C.the fact that they were no longer classmates
D.the ending of a shared activity
58.Americans view friendship as quick and changeable because ______.
A.their society is one of rapid changes B.they'd like to make friends with new people
C.their friendship never lasts long D.their families move every year

Your parents always told you that a solid education is the key to a successful future. For those of you that have or will be graduating from high school, the commitment(义务) you made to complete your schooling has been fulfilled. Another few years or so in some college classroom just doesn't sound too attractive; so what are your choices? Let's see, Choice 1—You can live with your parents, leech on to them, and basically do nothing. Or Choice 2—You could get yourself a job. Of course, there are other choices, but for this little discussion, we'll just suppose that they aren't elevant(有关的).
Okay, so Choice 2 is obviously going to be more productive. You're finally going into the workforce and will be entering the real world. What would be a good place to start? Well, hopefully high school helped to give you some sort of an idea of what type of job you would like to enter. If not, then it would be a good idea to speak with an advisor or even a person working in the field you may be interested in before you jump into a job that you won't like. Gaining knowledge on a particular line of work beforehand can be very effective by helping you in your search to find that job that you will enjoy doing. Another reason to research jobs and get some hands on work in relates to the fact that it will also be helpful in buffing up(增光) your resume(简历) and providing you some valued experience. Internships(实习职务) or volunteering are usually a good place to start.
If you are ready to begin a job after high school, the main benefits will clearly be saving money from high college expense and happily making a living in your chosen jobs. From another point of view, jumping into the workforce is sometimes the only way to see for yourself if you are ready to work a 40-hour week yet. If you decide that full time work is not what you are ready for, then this may suggest that you should go back to school and get a degree. Besides, a college degree will usually equal higher wages.

A.high school students B.college graduates

The latest United Nations report on the AIDS spread paints a sad picture. It concludes that the regions of the world most affected by AIDS will experience rapid increases in deaths among young adults. This will have serious social and economic results.
The spread of AIDS and the virus that causes it, HIV, is particularly destructive in Africa. It is estimated(估计) that in sub-Saharan Africa, over twenty-four million adults and children are now living with HIV. In sixteen sub-Saharan countries, according to the UN, at least ten percent of the people between the ages of fifteen and forty-nine are HIV positive(阳性). In South Africa and Zimbabwe, half the people between those ages may die of AIDS. In Botswana, about one in three adults is infected(感染), and some two-thirds of the country's fifteen-year-old boys may die before they grow up.
As a result, agriculture, business, education, and health care are already suffering serious loss. The United States is spending millions of dollars to do it. Funding(基金) is being used for prevention campaigns and to make AIDS treatment more affordable. Money is also being used to reduce mother-to-child transmission rates, support home-and community-based care, and provide care for children orphaned by AIDS. The Peace Corps will soon make an all-out effort to bring AIDS education to the countries most at risk. It is important that the governments and citizens of those nations most affected by AIDS do their part to fight against it. Some, like Senegal and Uganda, have already begun programs for disease prevention. These countries are experiencing falling or stable(稳定) HIV rates and less suffering. But for other nations, much remains to be done.
64.The report shows that ______.
A.more places are affected by AIDS B.more deaths are caused by AIDS
C.more young adults are dying of AIDS D.the spread of AIDS can never be controlled

Massive(大) flooding in India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh has left hundreds of dead and about one-million homeless. Rivers rushing down the Himalayas have destroyed bridges and communications, killed farm animals, and made hundreds of thousands of hectares(公顷) of farm land unusable. Relief officials are hard pressed to meet demands for food, fresh water, clothing, and shelter(避难所). And they fear an outbreak of disease caused by poor environment(环境) and dirtied water.
Experts believe that massive de-forestation in the Himalayas is an important cause in such flooding. Trees prevent the loss of soil. Destroying forests means too much rain runs off barren hills carrying tons of soil. This raises the level of river beds, which causes water to spill over dams and banks. The result is flooding.
Some countries have lost more than ninety percent of their forest cover in recent ten years. This is largely a result of urbanization(城市化), agricultural expansion, largescale industrial and construction projects, massive logging, and poor national policies on forest protection. In Ethiopia, forests that had once covered some forty percent of the country were reduced greatly by 1988, a year of massive flooding costing many lives and much destruction.
Forest protection is important to the prevention of such flooding. At the 1992 Riode Janiero Earth Meeting, leaders agreed on the importance of linking economic development to environmental protection. While no amount of planning or human effort can ever completely prevent floods, much can be done to reduce their frequency and destructiveness. The single most important thing is protecting the world's forests.
69.The underlined word “de-forestation”might mean “______”.
A.much forest B.planting trees
C.cutting down too much trees D.sales of wood
70.Which of the following best shows how flooding comes into being?
a.the loss of soil b.raise of the river bed level
c.too much rain d.water's spilling over dams and banks
e.de-forestation
A.abcde B.cdbae C.ebacd D.ecabd
71.Which is true according to the passage?
A.The rapid growth of population is one cause for the loss of forest cover.
B.Man can completely prevent floods if everyone tries his best.
C.Forest protection can reduce the numbers and destructiveness of floods.
D.Ethiopia is a country with 40 percent of its land covered by forests.

All her life, Mrs Foster had had such a strong fear of missing a train, a plane, a boat or even the start of a play that her fear was almost an illness. In other respects, she was not a particularly nervous woman, but just the thought of being late on occasions like these used to throw her into a terrible state. As a result, a small muscle in the corner of her left eye would begin to tremble. It was not very much, but the annoying(令人烦恼的) thing was that the problem refused to disappear until an hour or so after the train or plane— or whatever it was—had been safely caught.
It is really strange how in certain people a simple fear about a thing like catching a train can grow into serious anxiety. At least half an hour before it was time to leave the house for the station, Mrs Foster used to step out of the lift all ready to go, and then, as she was unable to sit down, she used to move about from room to room until her husband, who must have known about her state of mind, finally joined her and suggested in a cool dry voice that perhaps they had better go now, had they not?
Mr Foster any possibly had a right not to be annoyed by this silliness of his wife's, but he could have had no excuse for increasing her anxiety by keeping her waiting unnecessarily. It is not, of course, certain that this is what he did, but whenever they were going somewhere, his timing was so exact—just a minute or two late, you understand—and his manner so calm that it was hard to believe that he was not purposely causing pain to the unhappy lady. He must have known that she would never dare to call out and tell him to hurry. He had trained her too well for that. He must also have known that if he was prepared to wait just a little longer than his wife, he could make her nearly crazy. On one or two special occasions in the later years of their married life, it seemed almost as though he had wanted to miss the train, simply to increase the poor woman's suffering.
If the husband was faulty, what made his behavior doubtly unreasonable was the fact that, with the exception of this one small weakness, Mrs Foster was, and always had been a good and loving wife. For over thirty years, she had served him whole-heart edly and well. There was no doubt about this. Even she knew it, and although she had for years refused to let herself believe that Mr Foster would ever hurt her on purpose, there had been times recently when she had begun to wonder.
72.Mrs Foster's fear of missing a train or plane was so strong that ______.
A.it made her ill B.it was like an illness
C.it made her throw things D.it made her hard to fall asleep
73.She got so nervous that a muscle in her eye began to tremble and ______.
A.didn't stop until she'd been traveling for at least an hour
B.stopped half an hour after she was on the train or plane
C.didn't stop until just before she caught the plane
D.stopped the moment her husband arrived
74.Mr Foster ______.
A.didn't know how anxious his wife could become
B.wanted to cause his wife pain
C.had always made his wife suffering on purpose by missing the train
D.probably kept his wife waiting deliberately(蓄意地)
75.Mrs Foster ______.
A.believed that Mr Foster would never try to hurt her
B.was beginning to think that Mr Foster might want to hurt her
C.thought that Mr Foster's unreasonable behavior was his only weakness
D.managed to solve the annoying problem

Dear Editor,
I'm a middle school student named Li Hua. I'm writing to tell you something. Recently I've noticed that many of my schoolmates often go to the cyber cafe near our school. The other day, I went there, too. I was surprised to see many students playing computer games, seeing movies or chatting. Some students were even talking about love affairs online.
In my opinion, cyber cafes should be a place where we can find much useful information. Internet should be a window to the outside world rather than a place for games. Internet is good if we make good use of it. Otherwise, it will do us great harm. So the local government should take measures to make sure of the safety of us students in cyber cafes.
Yours,
Li Hua
