第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

When people talk of a virus (病毒) these days, chances are that they are talking

about computer viruses that have the power to wipe out all the valuable work they may have stored in their computers. Imagine, this virus has the power to make military (军事) systems, big banks, airports, hospitals and traffic systems to a halt (中断)!

The softer the name of the virus, the deadlier it may get. Remember the recent

Love bug virus, which created such trouble over the world? It came as an “I love you” message and anyone who opened that love-filled e-mail, was caught in the virus trap.

What does a computer virus do? It attacks electronic objects that are programmed.

The virus spreads through connections between these electronic devices (装置). For

virus spreading experts, e-mail is a favourite method of unleashing (释放) their

destructive weapon.

But scientists warn that this is not the worst that can happen. There is more. For people are also connected through phones. The next virus may actually attack mobile phones, especially those that are programmed to do many tasks apart from just

communicating. It would then be easy for a virus to infect (感染) those programmes and create major disorder.

For example, these viruses may have the power to record your phone conversations

and make others hear them. They could create problems with your electronic money ac-

counts, or they could create a mountain of telephone bills for calls you never made. And that would be a disaster. A report on this was published in the New Scientist recently.

One way out would be to have simpler phones with not so many different functions

(功能). That way there would be fewer programmes for viruses to attack. But mobile

phone makers are in a fix. People no longer want an electronic item to perform just one task. They want more and more functions added on. That would mean more software

programmes to make the mobile phone perform all those functions. And that means the

possibility of more viruses.

56. Which of the following statements is not true about a computer

A. It can not only attack a computer but also a mobile phone.

B. It can get rid of all the useful information stored in a computer.

C. It can destroy important systems like the military systems and traffic systems.

D. It usually spreads through the e-mail system.

57. According to the scientists in this passage, .

A. mobile phones will have fewer functions in the future

B. mobile phones with more functions will be easier to be affected by viruses

C. mobile phones with the single function of communicating will not be affected by

viruses

D. mobile phones have already been affected by viruses

58. Which of the following has a similar meaning to the underlined phrase “in a fix”?

A. in trouble B. in debt      C. in difficulty    D. in danger

59. It can be inferred from the passage that .

A. scientists and common users have different concerns (关心) about mobile phones

B. a virus can have worse effect on a computer than it does a mobile phone

C. limiting the functions of mobile phones can prevent them from being infected

D. mobile phone makers are on the side of the scientists

B

To listen to the two professors, Smith the zoologist and Jones the philosopher (哲学家), you would never guess they were friends. They argued everything. Smith was a scientist, who believed in “facts”, while Jones was a thinker, who believed in “ideas”.

One day, two scientists found themselves at Coney Island. Professor Smith had a young niece, who, for her birthday, had begged her uncle to take her there. Smith

asked his friend Jones to come along. That is how the three of them came to a notice

about a remarkable dog.

  "Let’s go inside, uncle. Please!"

What they saw did amaze them. The dog danced on its hind legs, keeping time to the music. When asked to add two and three, it barked five times. When the man played a tune on the piano, the dog sang in time to the music. It could even talk, after

a fashion (模仿). When asked how many states there were in the Union, it made a noise

which sounded remarkably like fifty.

The old scientist was amazed by The dog's performance, so after an hour of bargaining the dog was his.

  "It is for me, uncle?"

"Not exactly, my dear," Professor Smith answered. "I need it for an important scientific experiment."

"Come on, Smith," said the philosopher. "You always say 'seeing is believing'.

The dog is genius(天才).What more do you need to know?"

Professor Smith said: "We may be close to the greatest scientific discovery of all time. If I can find out why this animal is so intelligent (聪慧的)…"

A few days later, Jones visited his friend.

   You what?" he cried, unbelieving.

“I did what any scientist would do," said Smith. “I put the dog to sleep and cut out its brain to find out what was special about it.”

  "And?' Jones asked.

"Do you know, I couldn't find anything which would explain its extraordinary

abilities," Professor Smith replied.

At that moment, the professor's niece came into the room.

“Can I play with my doggie, uncle? Please! He's so clever.”

Neither science nor Philosophy had an answer for the little girl.

60. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

  A. The clever dog was sure to be rescued by the two scientists.

  B. Professor Smith insisted on seeing the remarkable dog.

  C. Professor Smith was disappointed at the result.

  D. When asked the number of states in the U. S. A, the dog

61. What struck the scientist most in the dog's performance?

  A. The dog's great intelligence.

  B. The dog's dancing to the music.

  C. The dog's understanding of its master.

  D. The dog's ability to talk after a fashion.

C

Tens of thousands of baby penguins (企鹅) face starvation after two giant icebergs

broke off the Antarctic ice sheet and blocked their parents' way to feeding areas.

Adelie and emperor penguins nesting on the Ross Island are now forced to walk

long distances over the icebergs to obtain food for their chicks, born during the

November-December breeding (繁育) season.

“The penguins are having to walk 50 km further than usual to reach the sea,"

Dean Peterson. The flightless birds travel on land at just one to two km per hour.

The problem could halve (平分) the chick survival rate at the three Adelie penguin colonies on Ross Island-estimated (估计) at 130,000 breeding pairs. In all Antarctica, there an estimated three million Adelie penguin breeding pairs. Around 12,O00 breeding pairs of emperor penguins, the largest penguin species at up to four feet tall, are also affected.

The icebergs broke from the vast Ross Ice shelf, south of New Zealand, in March

2000 and are now sandwiched between Ross Island and Franklin island, 93 miles to the

north.

Scientist Peterson estimated that penguins were taking days to make the round trip to the sea to fish, and then back to regurgitate(吐出)food for their chicks.

"At that point they were quite tired and probably don't have much to regurgitate," he said.

Penguins already have long odds (差距很大)on reaching adulthood, with only 10

percent surviving beyond adolescence(青春期).

"We are probably looking at halving that again-we are sitting down at maybe the

five percent rate," Peterson said, adding some penguins already appeared to be leaving

the Ross Island to breed elsewhere.

Penguins come ashore to breed and then take it in turns to leave the nest to fetch

fish and other sea food to feed their young.

Researchers say large blocks of the Antarctic ice sheet are breading off for several reasons, including global warming.

63. Baby penguins on the Ross Island are starving because .

A. their parents cann’t find their way back to the feeding

B. there is not enough food for so many breeding pairs

C. the broken icebergs damaged their feeding areas

D. their parents have to travel too far to get food

64. After the long trip, the mother penguins .

A. have already ate up all the food

B. are too tired to feed their young

C. can't bring up much to feed their

D. are too hungry themselves

65. From what scientist Peterson said, we can infer that .

A. penguins usually have a high survival rate

B. the survival rate of penguins is dropping

C. there are few penguins left on Ross Island

D. the present situation can cause the penguins to die out

66. Which of the following best supports the main idea of the passage?

A. Broken icebergs endanger penguin chicks.

B. Global warming caused the icebergs to break off.

C. The long trip makes mother penguins too tired to feed their young.

D. The change of weather affects penguins.

Our spiritual intelligence quotient (精神智商), or SQ, helps us understand ourselves, and live fuller, happier lives.

While we're all born with SQ, most of us don't even realize that we have it.

Fortunately, you don't have to sign up for classes to learn how to enhance (加强) your SQ. Here are some simple steps that can lead you to this new level of understanding:

Sit Quietly. The process of cultivating (培养) spiritual intelligence begins in solitude (独处) and silence. To tune in to its whisper, you have to turn down the

volume in your busy, noisy, complicated life and force yourself to do nothing at all.

Start small by creating islands of silence in your day. In the car, instead of reaching for the radio dial, use the time to think. At work, shut the door to your office between

meetings, take a few deep breaths and let them out very, very slowly. Enjoy the still-

ness in your home after the kids are finally in bed.

Step Outside. For many people, nature sets their spirit free. Go outside to watch a beautiful sunset. If you're walking the dog, take the time to admire flowers in bloom. Follow the flight of a bird; watch clouds float overhead.

Find An Activity You Enjoy. It's important to find a hobby that helps you tune in to your spirit. Garden, walk or jog, arrange flowers, listen to music that touches your soul.

Ask Questions Of Yourself. Ask open-ended questions, such as" What am I feeling? What are my choices? Where am I heading?"

But don't expect an answer to arrive via (通过) some supernatural form of e-mail.

"Rarely do I get an immediate answer to my questions, ' says Reverend Joan Carter, a Presbyterian minister in Sausalito, California. "But later that day I suddenly find myself thinking about a problem from a perspective (角度) I never considered before."

Trust Your Spirit. While most of us rely on gut feelings (直觉) to realize danger,

spiritual intelligence usually pushes us, not away from, but toward some action that

will lead to a greater good.

67. The passage is mainly about .

A. what your SQ is and in what way it can benefit our life

B. what your SQ is and in what way it can be

C. the relationship between your SQ and your

D. advantages and disadvantages of SQ

68. To enhance your SQ, you should first .

A. bear loneliness and silence

B. give up the daily things in your life

C. make your life simpler and less busy

D. listen more to your whisper

69. The underlined phrase" turn in to your spirit" in the fifth paragraph probably means .

A. get your spirit relaxed B. keep up your spirit

C. listen to your spirit      D. change your spirit

70. The author mentions the example of Reverend Joan Carter to show that .

A. there are no immediate answers to your questions

B. e-mails can't help work out a problem

C. the more questions your ask, the better answers you'll get

D. changing your way of thinking might help you solve a problem

71. From the passage, we can know that the most important thing to improve your SQ is     .

A. a peaceful mind B. deep thought

C. spare time and hobbies   D. good spirits

E

With the world's attention at the end of 2000 on the election for the U. S. President, maybe we didn’t much notice the election for a new Canadian government.

Canadians are proud to have a political system that is different from that in the U.S. A. In Canada, as in the U. S. , there is a time difference between the east and west coasts. This means that voting in the east of the country ends four hours before the west. In Canada, there is an election law which says that no one can publicize the result of the exit survey before voting ends in every province. Some 13 million Canadians voted in 2000. The voting papers are counted by hand, not by machine. In 2000, all the counting was done within a few hours of the end of the voting.

Voters elect Members of Parliament (下议院) from districts called ridings (选区). The party with the largest number of Members of Parliament (MPs) forms the

government, and that party chooses its leader, who becomes the Prime Minister.

Canada has ten provinces and two territories (领地), but most of the 31 or more

million Canadians live close to the border with the U. S. A. One third of the population

live in the most developed province of Ontario (安大略), and elect 101 seats out of the 301 seats in the House of Parliament.

In the recent election, there were two main parties——the Liberal Party and the Canadian Alliance. The Liberal Party, which has been in power since 1993, gets votes from the political Center and is neither right-wing nor left-wing. It is strong in the east of the country and, in fact, in 2000 won 173 seats in Parliament.

The Canadian Alliance is strong and getting stronger in the Canadian west where it won most of the seats. It is a right-wing party. The political difference between the east and west is a cultural difference. Eastern Canada was settled by Europeans in the early days, while people moved west much later. The east is older, the west younger.

Canada does not have a President. The Head of State is Britain's Queen Elizabeth

II, who is represented by a governor-general. The present governor-general is a woman,

Adrienne Clarkson. She is of Chinese origin.

72. From the passage we can infer that the author tends to think .

A. people pay too much attention to the American elections

B. Adrienne has nothing to do with Chinese

C. it is necessary to know some knowledge of Canadian elections

D. the Canadian political system is better than that of the U. S. A

73. It is forbidden by law in Canadian elections .

A. to declare the voting result ahead of time

B. to elect a President of Canada without a permissions

C. to form a government without winning 173 seats in Parliament

D. to do vote counting beyond a few hours

74. Why did the Canadian Alliance fail in the election in 2000?

A. Most provinces did not support it.

B. It didn’t win more than half of Members of Parliament.

C. The population in the west of the country was smaller than in the east.

D. It didn't try to get votes from the people in the Canadian east.

75. The best title of this passage may be .

A. Different Politics in Canada and America B. The Main Parties in Canada

C. How to Vote in Canada D. The Canadian Elections
