阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form.

One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard (偶然听到)our conversation.“Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said it was.“Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

59.The postmaster was ready to help because .

Much attention has been given in the media(媒体)to the so-called information superhighway which is supposed to use computer and telecommunications(电信)technology to completely change the way America will be doing business and receiving information and entertainment at home in the future. There have been countless newspaper and magazine articles, television and radio discussions, meetings and conferences about it. However, according to a public opinion poll(民意测验), most Americans would say they had never heard of it.

The people who conducted the poll didn’t actually talk to most Americans, of course, but they did talk to 1,255 persons, and they say the result has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points. But even if it’s off by three percentage points, it’s still amazing. Two-thirds of Americans don’t recall having heard of the information superhighway. And, even among the 34 percent who have heard of it, most say that they have little understanding of what it is. But even though most of those who’ve heard of it don’t know what it is, six out of ten of them say that they’re for it.

It seems very strange that people can admit that they don’t know what something is and yet say they are for it, or against it, for that matter. It generally works out better when you find things out, rather than this business of liking something before finding out what it is. This is the way they judge everything these days. They are entitled(有权)to an opinion about everything whether they know anything about it or not.

Unfortunately, this is the way political leadership works today: the so-called leaders read the polls to find out what the people want and here’s a poll telling us that the people are ready to say what they want without knowing the first thing about it. This is the blind leading the blind. No wonder things are the way they are.

63.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Most Americans don’t really know what information superhighway is.

B.Two-thirds of Americans know a little about the information superhighway.

C.Most Americans have heard of information superhighway. But don’t know what it is.

D.60% of the Americans are for the idea of information superhighway

64.What point is the writer of the article trying to make about the American people?

A.They know little about information superhighway.

B.They say they agree with the leaders before they know who they are.

C.They hate to say“No”about anything new.

D.They express an opinion on something before they know anything about it.

65.The passage is in reality a criticism of    in the U.S.

A.the mass media B.the information superhighway

C.the political leadership D.the general public

66.The expression“the blind leading the blind”in the last paragraph means .

A.the ignorant leaders are taken in by the mass media

B.both the media and the Americans are blind

C.ill-informed leaders are leading the ignorant people

    D.opinion polls are often misleading

D

Immediately I got up and dressed, stuck my violin under my jacket, and went out into the streets to try my luck. I wandered about for an hour, looking for a likely spot, feeling as though I were about to commit a crime(犯罪). Then I stopped at last under a bridge near the station and decided to have a try.

I felt tense and nervous. One moment I was part of the hurrying crowds, the next I stood apart, my back to the wall, my hat on the pavement before me, the violin under my chin.

The first notes I played were loud and raw, then they settled down and began to run more smoothly. To my surprise I was neither caught nor told to shut up. Indeed, nobody took any notice at all. Then an old man without stopping secretly threw a penny into my hat, as if getting rid of some guilty evidence.

Other pennies followed, slowly but steadily, dropped by shadows who appeared not to see or hear me. It seemed too easy, like a secret trick.

I worked there for several days, gradually getting the truths of the trade by trial and error(反复试验).It was not a good thing, for example, to let the hat fill up with money; nor was it wise to empty it completely. Placing a couple of pennies in the hat to start the thing going soon became a regular rule.

C.empty the hat at regular times D.leave a small amount of money in the hat

E

“It hurts me more than you, ”and“This is for your own good.”These are the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean, my room, stay home and do homework.

That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The school and the educators made it easy on us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy(政策)We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators. Turned on the TV, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation.

Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students“SO passive”—and wonders what happened. Nothing was demanded of them, she believes.“TV, ”says Klompus, “contributes to children’s passivity.”“We’re not training children to work any more, ”says Klompus, “we’re talking about a generation of children who’ve ”never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them. Instead of saying‘go look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a child.”

Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It’s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It’s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’s for their own good. It’s time to start telling them no again.

72.Children are becoming more inactive in study because .

A.they spend much time on entertainment B.they have done too much homework

C.they have to complete too many duties D.teachers are too strict with them

73.To such children as described in the passage .

A.it is easier to say no than to say yes

B.neither is easy to say yes or to say no

C.it is easier to say yes than to say no

D.neither is difficult to say yes or to say no

74.By“permissive period in education”the author means a time .

A.when children are allowed to do what they wish to

B.when everything can be taught at school

C.when every child can be educated

D.when children are permitted to receive education

75.The main idea of the passage is that .

A.parents should leave their children alone

B.children should have more activities at school

C.it’s time to be more strict with our children

D.parents should always set a good example to their children

英语答案(附录音内容)

第一节

(Text 1)

M:That’s a nice bike. Is it new?

W:No. I got it almost five years ago, but it’s still in good condition.

(Text 2)

M:Would you rather eat at home or go out tonight?

W:I’d rather go out, but I don’t mind preparing supper at home if you’d rather not go.

(Text 3)

M:Good afternoon. This is Dick Williams at World Travel Company. Is Mr. Baker there?

W:No. He’s out to lunch. I’ll be glad to take a message.

(Text 4)

W:Would you like some hot coffee or tea?

M:I do like them both, but I’d rather have something cold.

(Text 5)

M:The car was a total loss. Did you see it?

W:Yes. And to think that three women and a baby were in that horrible accident without being hurt.

(Text 6)

W:Alan, you’ve been so busy lately that we don’t see you any more.

M:I’ve been trying to finish this research project so that I can present my findings at the conference in July.

W:But that’s two months away. You’ve still got lots of time.

M:Not really. You see, I’ve finished all the research, and I’ve just about organized all my notes, but it will take me almost two months to type them.

W:Well, if that’s your only problem, I can type up your paper in less than two weeks.

(Text 7)

M:Would you like a cup of coffee?

W:Yes. That would be good.

M:Cream and sugar?

W:Please.

M:Oh, no.

W:What’s the matter?

M:This machine is out of order.

W:Did you lose your money?

M:I sure did.

W:You ought to complain. These machines are always out of order.

M:Well, I still want a cup of coffee, don’t you?

W:Let’s go to the restaurant at the Students’ Center.

M:I don’t know. The last time I was there it was so crowded that I had to wait in line for almost an hour.

W:Really? Let’s go somewhere else then. I can’t be too long because I have a test at three o’clock.

M:Okay. Let’s go to the library. There’s another machine downstairs by the telephones.

(Text 8)

M:Jane, I hear that you are leaving school now. What do you want to do? Have you made up your mind yet?

W:No, not yet. But I think I’m going to take up singing.

M:Any special reasons?

W:Yes. It’s because I am good at singing songs. All my classmates say so. Besides, singing is quite interesting and you meet a lot of people.

M:And you will have to please them too.

W:Well, you do in any job, don’t you?

M:And what do your parents think about it?

W:They don’t quite agree to my idea. That’s the only trouble.

M:Have they got any other plans for you, then?

W:Yes, um…they try to send me to art college because they want me to be an actress.

M:Then what will you do?

W:Er…I haven’t decided yet. But I usually get my own way in the end.

(Text 9)

M:You don’t look too happy. What seems to be the problem?

W:I’ve got to write a long composition for my English class, and I just can’t come up with any idea, and it’s due tomorrow.

M:That shouldn’t be too difficult. Remember those pictures you were showing me last week? The ones from your voyage last winter.

W:Sure. I’ve got them here some place.

M:Why don’t you write about your impressions of the pyramids in Egypt and the camel ride you took.

W:That sounds like a good idea. I can also tell about our visit to North Africa, the Holy Land, and all of the historical places we visited.

M:Well, now that you’re feeling better about this, I think I’ll be on my way. I’ve got to finish my composition too.

W:Thanks for your help. Once I get organized, it won’t be so difficult.

(Text 10)

There’s a holiday next week and I can’t decide what to do. I have a lot of work to do at home,

and this would be a good chance to do it. But I’d rather not spend the holiday that way. I can work

at home all the rest of the year.

Last year I went north to the mountains. Everything was beautiful, but it is too cold this time

of year. And it’s really too far to go for a short holiday. I have decided that this is not a good time to

go to the mountains. But I do want to go someplace.

Perhaps this would be a good chance to go to the beach. I like to go for walks along the

seashore in the warm sunshine and watch the water. It’s only about eighty miles and I could get

there in about two hours. After thinking it over, I’m sure that this is a better time for the seashore

than the mountains. I guess I’ ll plan to go to the beach next week.

Oh, here’s a letter from Jim. He says he is going to his house in the mountains for the holiday,

and he wants me to go with him. After giving it some more thought, I guess it wasn’t really too

cold last year, and perhaps it might rain at the seashore and then I wouldn’t enjoy it at all. The

mountains are only 300 miles away. I think I’ll write to Jim right now and tell him I’ll go with him.

三、One possible version:

I’m a student of senior 3. At the beginning of this term, my parents and teachers asked me to

board in the school. They say it will be very convenient for me to ask questions whenever and

wherever. Besides, they think boarding will make it possible to make full use of my night time, and

that I can also develop the ability to look after myself.

However, I have my own thought. Staying at home in the evening, I will have more time to

work at my lessons. At the same time, I can learn what I think I’ m not good at.

I really don’t know what to do. Please give me your advice!
