阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

The world is not only hungry; it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange, since nearly 75 per cent of the earth’s surface is covered with water. But about 97 per cent of this is seawater, or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3 per cent—the fresh water that comes from rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources. And we cannot even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs and glaciers. Even worse, some of it has been polluted.

However, the need for water is increasing day by day. Only if steps are taken to deal with this problem now can we avoid a severe worldwide water shortage later on. A limited water supply would affect agriculture and industry. So we should all learn how to stop wasting water. One of the first steps is to develop ways to reuse it. Experiments have already been done in this field. Today, in most large cities, water is used only once and then flows through pipes to the sea, or into underground tanks for waste water. But it is possible to pipe water that has been used to a purifying plant. There it can be separated from waste matter and treated with chemicals so that it can be used again, just as if it were fresh from a spring.

But even if every large city purified and reused its water, there still would not be enough. Other sources would have to be found. Where could people turn to next?

The oceans seem to offer the best answer. There is plenty of water in the oceans. All that needs to be done is to remove the salt from the seawater. This process is expensive but it is already in use in many parts of the world. Research is going on to make the process cheaper. So you see, if we take these steps we’ll be in no danger of drying up!

51. This passage is about ___________.

A. the cause of water shortage and the steps to get more fresh water

B. the process of removing salt from the seawater

C. the increasing need for more fresh water

D. the ways people, especially in big cities, waste water

52.. We know from the passage that ___________.

 A. at present it is still impossible to get fresh water from the seawater

 B. research is being done in order to get fresh water from the seawater with less money

 C. it costs little to remove the salt from the seawater

 D. the oceans offers plenty of fresh water to mankind

53.. What is the meaning of the underlined words?

But it is possible to pipe water that has been used to a purifying plant.

A. a works where water is made clean again  B. a plant to be watered

    C. a plant which grows better        D. a station where water is supplied

54.. Choose a title for the passage.

A. Purifying Waste Water B. Increasing Need for Water

Cycling for Air with Love

Ted Schredd doesn't like cars. He wants people to stop driving because cars make the air dirty. Ted had an idea. He said, "I'm going to cycle around North America. I want to show everyone that cycling is a fun way to get around. If more people ride bikes, the air will be cleaner."

He left his hometown with $160 in his pocket. When he got to San Diego, he met another cyclist. The cyclist invited Ted to speak at a big meeting about the environment. He said, "We'll pay your airfare to Texas and we'll pay you to talk about your cycling trip." Two hours later, Ted was on a plane to the environmental conference and to a big surprise!

While he was at the conference, he met Deanna. It was love at first sight! They talked for six hours straight.

As they cycled from Florida to Montreal and then back to Vancouver, every day was an adventure. People paid for their food in restaurants and gave them extra money. Some people gave them $50 or $100. Should paper bags take the place of plastic carriers?

The supermarket of the Today Department Store is the sole department store or supermarket in the history of Taiwan to have used paper bags.

When Today opened the supermarket some ten years ago, everything was copied from the U.S. even the paper bags were similar to those available to American consumers and made of brown paper, a spokesman for Today said.

At that time, many people did not have their own means of transportation. It was very inconvenient to travel around carrying a paper bag, the spokesman said. The paper bags were more expensive and of poor quality, therefore, we switched to hand-carried plastic bags, he added.

The 17 major department stores in Taipei consume about three million pieces of plastic bags each month.

Experts who are against the use of plastic bags have urged the owners of department stores and supermarkets to use paper bags instead of plastic bags.

One possible version:

On the evening of September 26, 2006 a fire broke out in Room 307 on the 3rd floor of the Students' Flat in No. 2 Middle School. The fire resulted from an electric stove. The stove was used to boil water and it was forgotten to be turned off when the students went to the classroom. Fortunately, about 40 minutes later, the fire was put out by a group of teachers, students and firemen. As a result, nearly all the beds, quilts and clothes were burnt to ashes.

The fire has given us a lesson that electric stove should be banned in students' dorms.

M: Well, for example, when I was in kindergarten, I used to save the newspapers so that I could make things out of them, like paper trees, instead of just throwing them away. Now, the children in our neighborhood collect newspapers once a month to take them to a recycling center.

W: That's great. Well, thank you for your ideas.

Text 10

Ladies and gentlemen! I would like to introduce to you how I learned foreign languages.

Okay, first of all, 1 would surround myself in the language, the target language, which I wanted to learn. For example, 1 would watch a movie in that language, which would help me keep eager to learn vocabulary and phrases. You can watch TV, news reports, or radio reports, you know, anything so that you can hear the language regularly, which is really helpful, and keep motivated.

Next, I would keep a situational notebook. For example, in a restaurant, you use a certain phrase over and over again, and so if you can remember just one particular phrase in each setting, then you can immediately speak that language and have more confidence, and uh, you get more out of learning the language, I think.
