Early one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed impossible to get the thread to run smoothly around the needle.
Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practised sewing machine.
Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way.
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.
To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious(无意识的), but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves”.

Language learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners .Most children will“obey”spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child .Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.
Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can’t be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate ,they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation(模仿)leads on to deliberate(有意的)imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech.
It is a problem we need to get out teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world .Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds .
5.Before children start speaking________.
A.they need equal amount of listening
B.they need different amounts of listening
C.they are all eager to cooperate with the adults by obeying spoken instructions
D.they can’t understand and obey the adult’s oral instructions

7.A baby’s first noises are ________.
A.an expression of his moods and feelings
B.an early form of language
C.a sign that he means to tell you something
D.an imitation of the speech of adults
8.The problem of deciding at what point a baby’s imitations can be considered as speech________.
A.is important because words have different meanings for different people
B.is not especially important because the changeover takes place gradually
C.is one that should be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with age

The greatest recent changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods.
This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’ s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age ,and though women tend to marry younger ,more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more after wads, return to full or part-time work.Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.
10.We are told that in an average family about 1990________.
A.many children died before they were five
B.the youngest child would be fifteen
C.seven of eight children lived to be more than five
D.four or five children died when they were five
11.When she was over fifty, the late 19th century mother________.
A.would expect to work until she died
B.was usually expected to take up paid employment
C.would be healthy enough to take up paid employment
D.was unlikely to find a job even if she is now likely
12.Many girls, the passage says, are now likely to ________.
A.marry so that they can get a job
B.leave school as soon as they can
C.give up their jobs for good after they are married
D.continue working until they are going to have a baby
13.According to the passage,it is now quite usual for women to ________.
A.stay at home after leaving school
B.marry men younger than themselves
C.start working again later in life
D.marry while still at school

Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value.
The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer-Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps.
Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius’ Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally inscribed the words“Post Office” instead of“Post Paid” on the several hundred stamps that he printed.
Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left fourteen One Penny Orange-Reds and twelve Two Penny Blues. Because of the Two Penny Blue’s rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $16 800 for it.
14.Over a century ago, Mauritius ________.
A.was an independent country
B.belonged to India
C.was one of the British colonies
D.was a small island in the Pacific Ocean

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time.
Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.
E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.
The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun see a great movie perhaps-and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.
With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.
E-mail is also an inexpensive way stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.
We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t take the place of any of the old ways.
17. The purpose of this passage is to ________.

A. reach a group of people at one time conveniently
B. keep one’s communication as personal as possible
C. pass on much more information than the later
D. get in touch with one’s friends faster than the later
20. The best title for this passage is ________.

“How can I learn English well?” This is a question many students ask. In my opinion, the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite the text and write it out, you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says you’re a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect.
This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you’ll find it not half so hard as you might have thought.
Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English.
Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation.
56.In the writer’s opinion, the most effective way in learning English is ________.
A.to practise speaking, writing and feeling it
B.to forget your own native language
C.to translate everything into his own language
D.to memorize the English words and grammatical rules
57. “Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way.”This sentence means that memorizing your own language can ________.
A.help you to study English well
B.stop you mastering English
C.make English easy to learn
D.help you notice mistakes
58.Equally important is to feel the language. “to feel the language” here means________.
A.to get a knowledge of English by touching
B. to be able to read and write English
C.to translate English into your own by imagining
D.to be able to experience the rich sensation of the language

When we can see well, we do not think about our eyes often. It is only when we can not see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.
People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing and reading, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.
People who are farsighted face just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts. Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
When night falls, colors become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the side of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they can not see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive in daylight, is not as sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark.
59.We don’t know that our eyes are of great importance until ________.
A. we think about our eyes
B. we cannot see clearly

A.with wide open eyes
B.with half shut or narrowed eyes
C.straight at it
D.in a slightly different direction

Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they give him wood and other useful things, they give him cool places, and they help to stop drought and flood.
Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these points is the most important. Man wants to make money from trees,so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And also, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear.
This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even worse: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil-make the rain in-and also bind the soil, thus stopping it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing is left but useless desert.
63.The most important points of trees to man is ________.
A.they help him to make money
B.they give him cool
C.they give him wood and other things
D.they help him to stop drought and floods

A.many trees have been cut down by man
B.new trees are not well looked after
C.man has not paid enough attention to planting trees
D.all the above
65.Land becomes desert after all trees are cut down because ________ .
A. roots of trees break up the soil
B. there are too many rainfalls
C. strong winds bring a lot of sand
D. there are no longer trees to keep the rain and protect the top-soil.
66.Which title best fits the passage?
A.Trees and Man
B.The Function of Tree Wood
C.How do People do with Trees?
D.The Usage of Tree Roots

Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees-anywhere at all!
Because of the many changes in computer technology , laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.
At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “ Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

C.get information from around the world
D.have free laptops
71.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The program is successful.
B.The program is not workable.
C.The program is too expensive.
D.We don’t know the result yet.

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things: they learn to do without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle, compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.
If it is a matter of right answer, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine(常规) work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, and how to know what they know or do not know.
72.According to the passage, the best way for children to learn things is by ________.
A.listening to skilled people’s advice
B.asking older people many questions
C.making mistakes and having them corrected
D.doing what other people do
73.Which of the following does the writer think teachers should NOT do?

A.allow children to learn from each other
B.point out children’s mistakes whenever found
C.give children more book knowledge
D.correct children’s mistakes as soon as possible
75.The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle are ________.

Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human condition is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful (有压力的) conditions. Social support makes up of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.
Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship supportive. Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting (转移注意力) us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support money aid, material resources, and needed services - that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.

Many people are interested in family history, an area of study called genealogy (家谱学). Most genealogy experts have heard about the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Library claims to have the largest collection of genealogical records in the world. Shirley Griffith has more about this unusual research center.
The Family History Library has many records to help people search for information about their family histories. It has birth, marriage and death records from religious groups and governments. The collection includes official population, court and property records. It also includes burial records, ship passenger lists and published family histories.
The Family History Library has information from almost every area of the world. Most records are from 1550 through 1920. These records include the names of more than two thousand million people who have died. The library has few records of living persons.
The Family History Library is operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church has been gathering family history records around the world for more than one hundred years. The group urges (催促) its members to study the lives of early family members as a religious requirement.
The Family History Library is open to the public every day except Sunday and some holidays. Visitors are invited to use its books and other materials. Library officials say it is one of the most popular places for visitors in Utah. About two thousand four hundred people use the library each day.
Individuals, families and private groups have given some of their records to the library. The library bought other records from governments. All the information is gathered with the approval (批准) of governments or officials who supervise (监督) the records.
The library copies many records to a kind of film that can be read with special equipment. It is known as microfilm. The collection is always expanding. Today, Church representatives are making copies of important records around the world.
Many people find it difficult to travel to Utah to use the Family History Library. So, the Church has set up more than three thousand Family History Centers in seventy-five countries around the world.

Fred Michel is one of 7.2 million Americans who moonlight, or hold more than one job.
Once a week, after his day job as medical director of a mental health center, the 40-year-old psychiatrist (精神病大夫) heads to a part-time job at a treatment center for young people. Twice a month, he travels three hours to another teenage treatment center.
Last year, 5.4 percent of the American workforce held second jobs, according to the US Labor Department, and that looks set to increase this year.
Many workers like the safety that moonlighting provides, says Carl Hausamn, the writer of "Moonlighting: 148 Great Ways to Make Money to the Side."
The information from the US Labor Department shows that 40 percent of US moonlighters in 1997 took a second job to meet household expenses or pay off debts. Others save money or buy some special things.
People also take second jobs with an eye to the future - wanting to try out a new field or gain experience.
Michel started moonlighting when medical systems were unstable (不稳定的). He wanted to make sure he wasn't tied to one system that ended up failing.
Just as the purposes for moonlighting vary, the moonlighters cross all age and racial groups. And they work in a variety of industries - no longer just service, office and sale jobs.
“Technology just affects your ability to make money,” Hausman says. "That makes a frequent change in moonlighting."
As its name means, moonlighting still occurs mostly at night. And that results in some pressures. Chief among them is time.
Full-time employers could misunderstand, too. Some companies do not allow after-hour work because they fear it will affect their employees' 9-to-5 performance.
"The primary employer is saying, ‘Wait, I'm paying you for the sharp, fresh, energetic you,’” says Tom Gimbel, president and founder of LaSalle Staffing in Chicago. "If you' re burning yourself at both ends, it's going to show."
Still, the good done to the moonlighters can be great. Besides extra income, moonlighters enjoy variety, freedom and chance to do something new. They also may find their part-time jobs strengthen what they do full time.
Besides, "it's fun," Michel says. Not only do his part-time jobs offer a chance to network, stretch his professional skills and make more money, but they also give him the variety he wouldn't find just in a full-time job.
"It' s a way of pulling from the spice cabinet" he says, "and offering a little variety throughout the day."

"I've changed my mind. I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my daddy back." Lucien Lawrence' s letter to Father Christmas written after his schoolteacher father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched every heart. Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn't see the stars in the sky. When those whom we love depart from us, we cannot see the stars for a while.
But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father is there too, in your mind and in your heart. I find that my parents, long dead now, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive. I still live to please them and I' m still surprised by their reactions. I remember that when I became a professor, I was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself, that I couldn't wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all Mother said was "I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!" I haven' t forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.
It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care. Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors (挑衅者),and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It's a serious thought, one to give me pause.
I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet "Deliver my soul from the sword (剑), and my darling from the power of the dog." Yet I know the death comes to us all, and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on, I'm sure, in the lives of those we loved, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.

Nervous uncertainty surrounds the fate(命运) of US journalist Daniel Pearl, with no clear communication from his kidnappers (绑匪) and no sign of his where abouts after three separate police searches for his body in the troublesome port city Karachi, Pakistan.
Pearl, a 38-year-old Wall Street Journal reporter, disappeared two weeks ago on his way to an interview in Karachi. An email allegedly from his kidnappers contained four photos of him and a variety of demands, including one for the release of Pakistani prisoners being held at the US naval base in Cuba.
The searches were started last Friday night by an email claiming that Pearl had been killed and his body thrown“in the graveyards of Karachi.”
Pearl has worked for The Wall Street journal for 12 years and is now their South Asia bureau chief. He was born in Princeton, New Jersey and graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in communications.
He joined The Wall Street Journal in November 1990, first as a reporter in the Atlanta bureau. In 1993 he moved to the Washington office to cover transportation before beginning a series of overseas postings.
The members of a radical(激进的) Islamic group in Pakistan who admit having kidnapped him say Pearl is a member of the Israeli intelligence service, Mossad. But Pearl's employers have angrily denied(否认) that he is the agent (代理) of any government.
Pearl's French wife, Marianne, is six months pregnant with their first child.
For the past few weeks the couple have been living in Karachi while Pearl tried to arrange an interview with Mubarak Ali Shah Gilani, head of the small miclitant Islamic group Tanzeem ul-Fuqra.

Student participation(参与) in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the student in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student's oral participation. Although there are formal lectures during which the student has a passive role(i.e., listening and taking notes), many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions, and informal lectures. In graduate discussions the professor had a “manager” role and the students make presentations and lead discussions. The students do the actual teaching in these discussions.
A professor's teaching method is another factor (因素) that determines the degree and type of student participation. Some professors prefer to control discussion while others prefer to guide the class without controlling it. Many professors encourage students to question their ideas. Students who object to the professor's point of view should be prepared to prove their positions.
In the teaching of science and mathematics, the controlling mode of instruction is generally traditional, with teachers presenting formal lectures and students taking notes. However, new educational trends have turned up in the humanities and social sciences in the past twenty years. Students in edcuation, society, and history classes, for example, are often required to solve problems in groups, design projects, make pressentations, and examine case studies. Since some college or university courses are“practical” rather than theoretical, they pay more attention to “doing”for themselves.
59“Participation in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the student” in many courses except in .
Ascience and mathematics Bthe humanities and social sciences
Cinformal lecture courses Ddiscussion courses
60From the passage we know that education in the humanities and society.

Dhas become more practical than theoretical
61The reason why some professors ask students to make presentations and lead discussions is that .
Athese professors are often not well prepared before class
Bthese professors want to strees“doing”
Cthese professors want to test the students' abilities
Dthese professors are not willing to teach theory
62Which of the following sentences is true according to the passage?
AStudent participation is not common in the classroom in many courses like society.
BSome professors want to control the classroom discussion.
CSome professors usually want the students to take part in the teaching of science and mathematics.
DNew educational trends have turned up in teaching of natural sciences such as chemistry.

Scientists have tried to come up with biological explanations for the difference between boys and girls.
However, none were believable enough to explain the general picture. As one scientist points out,“There are slight genetic(遗传的) differences between the sexes at birth which may affect the subjects boys and girls choose. But the difficulty is that by the time children reach school age, there are so many other effects that it is almost impossible to tell whether girls are worse at science and maths, or whether they've been brought up to think of these subjects as boys'‘ territory’”.
Statistics(统计数据) show that in mathematics, at least, girls are equal to boys. A recent report suggests that girls only stop studying mathematics becuase of social attitudes. One of the reports' authors says,“While it is socially unacceptable for people not to be able to read and write, it is still acceptable for women to say that they are ‘hope-less’at maths. Our research shows that, although girls get marks which are as good as the boys', they have not been encouraged to do so.”
The explanation for the difference, which is very clear during the teenage years, goes as far back as early childhood experiences. From their first days in nursery school, girls are not encouraged to work on their own or to complete tasks, although boys are. For example, boys and not girls, are often asked to ‘help’ with repair work. This encouragement leads to a way of learning how to solve problems later on in life. Evidence(证据) shows that exceptional mathematicians and scientists did not have teachers who supplied answers; they had to find out for themselves.
A further report on maths teaching shows that teachers seem to give more attention to boys than to girls.
Most teachers who took part in the study admitted that they expect their male students to do better at mathematics and science subjects than their female students. All of this tends to encourage boys to work harder in these subjects, gives them confidence(信心) and makes them believe that they can succeed.
Interestingly, both boys and girls tend to regard such ‘male’subjects like mathematics and science as difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls avoid mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons.
Mathematics and science are mainly male subjects, and therefore, as girls become teenagers, they are less likely to take them up. Girls do not seem to want to be in open competition with boys. Neither do they want to do better than boys because they are afraid to appear less female and so, less attractive.

The next time you try for a high-ranking post, you could let your possible boss listen to a recommending(推荐) phone call“made ”by US President George W. Bush or British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Of course, neither of them could really do that for you-you would just“borrow” their voices.
AT&T labs will start selling speech software that it says is so good at reproducing the sounds of a human voice that it can recreate voices and even bring the voices of long-dead famous people back to life.
The software, which turns printed text into speech, makes it possible for a company to use recordings of a person's voice to say things that the person never actually said.
Possible customers for the software, which is priced in the thousands of dollars, include telephone call centres, companies that make software that reads digital(数学的) files aloud, and makers of automated voice devices(装置). The advances raise several problems. Who, for example, owns the rights to a famous person's voice?( Some experts even believe that new contracts(合同) will be drawn that include voice-licensing clauses.)
And although scientists say the technology is not yet good enough to commit fraud(假冒), would the synthesized(合成的) voices at last be able to trick people into thinking that they were getting phone calls or digital audio recordings from people they know?
Even Mr Fruchterman, one of AT&T lab's possible first customers, said he wondered what the new technology might bring.“Just like you can't trust a photograph any more.”he said,“you won't be able to trust a voice either.”
68With the help of the speech software, it is most possible .

Bthe government will forbid the sale of the software in the market.
Cit's hard to decide whether the software will enjoy popularity.
Dthe software will soon prove to be nothing but rubbish.
71The passage mainly wants to .
Aintroduce a new software Bexplain the disadvantage of a new invention
Cadvertise a new kind of product Ddescribe the future market of a new product

Although they may not die from lack of love, adults also need a great amount of affection(友情) and companionship. In the past, many people spent their entire lives in the communities in which they were born and raised. Many more people continued to live with their parents, brothers and sisters after they were married and had children of their own. By remaining in familiar communities with relatives nearby, families had enough opportunities for friendly contact and for support in time of trouble.
Recent studies suggest that family arrangements in Western societies have not changed as much in the last few centuries as is generally believed. Yet most sociologists agree that in modern societies, there are fewer opportunities for friendship and support from relatives outside the immediate family. Parents and children often live apart from other relatives, and seldom visit them. Also, the family moves when a parent accepts a job in another place or when it decides to live in a better neighborhood. Together, loneliness and mobility(迁移) force immediate family members to depend heavily on one another for affection and companionship.
Because the family is one of the few ongoing sources of affection and companionship in modern societies, a high percentage of people continue to marry, even though it is possible for a single man and woman to live together without marrying. On the other hand, because affection and companionship have become so important, families are more likely to break up if the husband's or wife's emotional(情感的) needs are not met within the family circle-even if all other family functions (功能) are being satisfactorily performed, and in this sense, affection and companionship have become the touchstone of the modern family.
72It is generally believed that .
Amany people spend their lives in familiar communities
Ba person can easily get in touch with relatives in times of difficulty
Cthe organization of the family has changed a great deal
Dwestern societies have not changed much in the past few years
73Sociological studies show that .
Athe more the family moves, the less support it gets from its distant relatives
Bparents and children live together to make up for the lack of relatives outside the family
Cfamily arrangements have changed and so there is little need for companion of relatives
Dfamily members are separated from each other because of lack of support from relatives
74The word“touchstone”in the last paragraph may be replaced by .
Aresult Btrouble Cfunction Dstandard
75In the last paragraph, the writer mainly wants to say .
Aaffection and companionship are important for the family and they can be gained from nowhere but the family
Baffection and companionship can come from the family and at the same time safeguard the family
Cthere are few ways to gain affection and companionship but the best way to get them is from the family
Din modern societies a lot of families break up and it's just for a lack of affection and companionship

Joan Chen is famous both in China, where she grew up, and in the United States, where she now lives. How did Joan become a famous actress in two countries? It’s an interesting story.
Joan Chen was born in Shanghai in 1961. When she was 14, some people from a film studio (制片厂) came to her school and chose her to study at the studio. She was happy about this chance, but mainly she liked the idea of getting out of school. Soon, however she discovered that she really liked acting. At age 18, she won the Golden Rooster, China's top film prize.
In the late 1970s, Joan's parents, who were doctors, moved to the United States. Joan joined them when she was 20 and went to college there. Her parents hoped she would study medicine. Instead, she majored in film and later looked for work as an actress. To work in the United States, Joan had to start all over again. She told Hollywood that she was an actress in China, but she only got some small parts in TV shows.
One day Joan went to speak to a director who was making a movie called Tai - pan. The interview didn't go well. As she walked away, a man in a car noticed her. The man was Dino DeLaurntiis, the film’s producer. He immediately offered her a leading part. A year later, she started in Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor and was on her way to worldwide fame.

A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.
A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises (出现) from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.
There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two - headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say so peculiar (奇怪的) that I do not know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl -friend.
No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.
59.The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is ____ .

D. encourages them not to have strange beliefs
62.The author’s mention of sticks and telephones is meant to suggest that ______.
A. fairy stories are still being made up
B. there is some misunderstanding about fairy tales

A. they are full of imagination
B. they just make up the stories which are far from the truth
C. they are not interesting
D. they make teachers of history difficult to teach

With the possible exception of equal rights, perhaps the most heated argument across the United States today is the death penalty (死刑). Many argue that it is an effective deterrent (威慑) to murder, while others think there is no enough proof that the death penalty reduces the number of murders.
The argument advanced by those opposed (反对) to the death penalty is that it is cruel and inhuman punishment, that it is tile mark of a bad society and finally that it is of questionable effectiveness as a deterrent to crime (罪行) anyway.
In our opinion, the death penalty is a necessary action. Throughout recorded history there have always been those peculiar persons in every society who made terrible crimes such as murder. But some are more dangerous than others.
For example, it is one thing to take the life of another in time of blind anger, but quite another to coldly plan and carry out the murder of one or more people in the style of a butcher. Thus, murder, like all other crimes, is a matter of different degree. While it could be argued with some reason that the criminal in the first instance should be merely kept from society, such should not be the fate of the latter type murderer.
The value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime may be open to discussion. But the majority of people believe that the death penalty protects them. Their belief is proved by the fact that the death penalty prevents murder. For example, from 1954 to 1963, when the death penalty was carried out from time to time in California, the murder rate remained between three and four murders for each 100, 000 population. Since 1964 the death penalty has been done only once, and the muder rate has risen to10.4 murders for each 100, 000 population. The sharp climb in the state's murder rate, which began when killings stopped, does not happen by chance. It certainly shows that the death penalty does deter many murderers. If the law about death penalty is vetoed (否决), some people will be murdered- some whose lives may have been saved if the death penalty were in effect. This is really a life or death matter. The lives of thousands of people must be protected.
64.The main purpose of this passage is to _____.
A. speak for the majority B. support a veto
C. speak ill of the government D. argue for the value of the death penalty

A. if they stick to death penalty, the number of murders will be reduced
B. death penalty almost stopped from 1954 to 1963
C. the population of California has risen
D. death penalty is of little value
67.It can be inferred that the writer thinks that ______.
A. the death penalty is the most important problem in the United States today
B. the second type of murderers (in Paragraph 4) should be sentenced to death
C. the veto of the law about death penalty is of little importance
D. the value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime is not to be discussed
D
Technology has been an encouragement of historical change. It acted as such a force in England beginning in the eighteenth century, and across the entire Western World in the nineteenth. Rapid advances were made in the use of scientific findings in the manufacture (制造) of goods, which has changed ideas about work. One of the first changes was that other forms of energy have taken the place of human power. Along with this came the increased use of machines to manufacture products in less time. People also developed machines that could produce the same parts for a product: each nail was exactly like every other nail, meaning that each nail could be changed for every other nail. This means that goods could be mass production, although mass production required breaking production down into smaller and smaller tasks.
Once this was (lone, workers no longer started on the product and labored to complete it. Instead, they might work only one thousandth of it, other workers completing their own parts in certain order. There is nothing strange about this manufacturing work by today's standards. Highly skilled workers were unable to compare with the new production techniques, as mass production allowed goods of high standard to be produced in greater number than could ever be done by hand. But the skilled worker wasn't the only loser, the common workers lost too. Similar changes forced farmer away. The increased mechanization (机械化) of agriculture freed masses of workers from ploughing the land and harvesting its crops. They had little choice but to stream toward the rapidly developing industrial centers. Increasingly, standards were set by machines. Workers no longer owned their own tools, their skill was no longer valued, and pride in their work was no longer possible. Workers fed, looked after and repaired the machines that could work faster than humans at greatly reduced cost.
68. In this passage, which of the following is NOT considered as a change caused by the use of scientific findings in the production of goods?
A. Other forms of energy have taken the place of human power.
B. The increased exploitation of workers in the 19th century.

A. completely disappeared with the coming of the factory system
B. were dismissed by the boss
C. were unable to produce goods of high standard
D. were unable to produce fine goods at that same speed as machines
72.According to the passage, what did the farmers have to do with the coming of mechanization of agriculture?
A. Many of them had to leave their farmland for industrial centers.
B. They stuck to their farm work.
C. They refused to use machines.
D They did their best to learn how to use the machines.

Wind is the great maker of waves. There are exceptions, such as the tidal (潮汐的) waves sometimes produced by earthquakes under the sea. But the waves most of us know are produced by winds blowing over the sea .
Now before constructing an imaginary life history of a typical wave, we need to know certain
physical things about it. A wave has height, from trough ( low point) to crest ( high Point) . It has lengh-the distance from this crest to that of the following wave. The period of the wave means the time it takes for succeeding crests to pass a fixed point. None of these things stays the same--for all depend upon the wind, upon the depth of the water and many other matters.
The water that makes up a wave does not advance with it across the sea. Each drop of water turns around in a little circle with the passing of the wave, but returns very nearly to its original position. And it is fortunate that this is so. For if the huge masses of water that make up a wave actually moved across the sea, sailing would be impossible.
If we want to find the speed of a wave, we may use the following way :
Speed = wavelength × frequency
Here, wavelength is the distance between two high points (crests) , frequency means the number of cycles per second .
73.What causes waves?

In 1939 two brothers,Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino,California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue(烤肉)restaurant, then another drive-in.But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu:French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new idea:quick service,no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.
Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents.Cheese was another four cents.Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity(一致性),for the brothers had developed a strict routine (程序)for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks’ sticking to their routine .Their new drive-in became surprisingly popular, particularly for lunch.People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.
Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954,when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the special attraction of the brothers’ fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise(特许经营)other copies of their restaurants. The agreement struck included the right to duplicate(复制)the menu, the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches(拱门).

Maggie was very glad that James was not a frequent visitor to the house. In the children’s opinion, they had something that they couldn’t explain or understand about him and that excited their imagination. He stirred Maggie’s anger, however,so that she often said to her husband,“It’s a mercy that brother of yours doesn’t come oftener.”
In fact James came once a year, unexpectedly, around eight o’clock in the evening, and he stayed for six hours of close discussion with his brother. His arrival was a signal to the childreen that their bedtime would be delayed. Not that he ever spoke to them or played with them.He took no notice of them,as if he was unable to see children,at least until the time came for him to go.Indeed, after his first greeting and a careless kiss,James took no notice of Maggie either, except to add,“You’ll be getting on with the supper,Maggie.”Such was his regard for her.
Maggie paid him back in her own way.She kept the children up,the four of them,to keep her company, she said, but of course they sang and made a noise and broke the endless sound of James’voice.Very late, they dropped off to sleep in their chairs. Then, when James was about to go,Maggie woke them up and so more or less forced him to part with four shillings before he left. That gave her some satisfaction, for James, though rich, was unwilling to give or share what he had.He always went home by the last train, just after two o’clock.
Maggie’s children secretly stared at their uncle. They could not forget that he had,in their mother’s words,“lost two wives and taken a third.”They wondered about those two unfortunate, lost ladies. They asked each other what their fate(命运)had been, and if neither could ever be found again.James never brought his third wife with him nor ever mentioned her.The children decided that he must be so frightened of losing her that he never allowded her outside the door.

Humans are social animals. They live in groups all over the world. As these groups of people live apart from other groups, over the years and centuries they develop their own habits and ideas, which from different cultures. One important particular side of every culture is how its people deal with time.
Time is not very important in nonindustrial societies. The Nuer people of East Africa, for example,do not even have a word TIME that is in agreement with the abstract thing we call time. The daily lives of the people of such nonindustrial societies are likely to be patterned around their physical needs and natural events rather than around a time schedule(时间表)based on the clock. They cook and eat when they are hungry and sleep when the sun goes down. They plant crops during the growing seasons and harvest them when the crops are ripe. They measure time not by a clock or calendar(日历),but by saying that an event takes place before or after some other event Frequently such a society measures days in terms of “sleeps”or longer periods in terms of “moons.”Some cultures, such as the Eskimos of Greenland measure seasons according to the migration of certain animals.
Some cultures which do not have a written language or keep written records havce developed interesting ways of “telling time”.For example, when several Australian aborigines want to plan an event for a future time, one of them places a stone on a cliff or in a tree. Each day the angle of the sun changes slightly. In a few days, the rays of the sun strike the stone in a certain way. When this happens, the people see that the agreed-upon time has arrived and the event can take place.
In contrast(成对比),exactly correct measurement of time is very important in modem, industrialized societies. This is because industrialized societies require the helpful efforts of many pople in order to work. For a factory to work efficiently (well, quickly and without waste),for example, all of the workers must work at the same time. Therefore, they must know what time to start work in the morning and what time they may go home in the afternoon.Passengers must know the exact time that an airplane will arrive or depart.Students and teachers need to know when a class starts and ends.Stores must open on time in order to serve their customers.Complicated(复杂的)societies need clocks and calendars. Thus,we can see that if each person worked according to his or her own schedule, a complicated society could hardly work at all.
64.By saying“Humans are social animals”,the author means .
A.they live all over the world
B.they are different from other animals
C.they live in one place, district or country, considered as a whole
D.they are divided into many groups

B.don’t get used to using clocks and other timepieces
C.don’t measure time in their daily-lives around an exact time schedule
D.don’t need to plan their daily lives around an exact time schedule
66.The Australian aborigines’ way of“telling time”is based on .
A.the change of the sun rays
B.the movement of the earth in relation to the sun

"Mummy, I don' t know what to play with." Steve interrupts his mother, who is talking to a friend, for the fourth time. "You've got a room full of toys!" his mother says, impatiently. In fact it is the jumble of toys which is to blame for four-year-old Steve's lack of interest in his dolls, cars and stuffed (packed) animals. Each morning he tips out three washing baskets of toys all over his floor, listlessly pulls out something and shortly after is standing at his mother's desk or following her into the kitchen saying: "Mummy, I am bored."
A family therapist (心理医生) explains why children lose interest when they have a whole "toy shop" at home: "According to their brain development, little children are not in a position to judge the quality of a variety of things at once. There is always just one favorite toy for the moment. All the rest is left lying about." What can parents do to stop their children from being oversupplied with toys? Under no conditions simply make something disappear without the child's knowledge. If he/she takes no more notice of a toy, a parent can ask if it can be stored or given away. Be warned though the child will always say he/she wants it then! A talk with relatives and friends may also help. Lyn is the mother of four-year-old Jessie, and we like her way. A small set of shelves in her child's room holds the toys and books that are the current (at present) favorites. When it seems to her that her daughter is tired of these toys, they put them away in a box together and select some other toys from a cupboard in another room. The box of "old" toys goes into the cupboard. When her child says she is "bored", they also get something from her cupboard - it may be something she has had for some time but because she hasn't seen it for a while it is almost like a new toy.
Some favorite toys stay out all the time, and there is collection of dolls which sits in the coner, but in this way Lyn has found that she has fewer toys to put away at the end of the day and her daughter always has something "fresh" to play with.

58. Which of the following can be used in place of "jumble"?
A. Simple choice. B. Mixture in disorder.
C. Ordinary appearance. D. Same shape.
59. Which is the advice given to parents in the text?
A. Buy fewer toys for their children. B. Form good habits for their children.

Zinc (锌) is one of about 20 elements necessary for good health. It is present in the body in a very small amount, but it makes it possible for important chemical actions to be carried out in cells. Scientists are just beginning to discover how zinc and other elements work.
Researchers first studied zinc as a way to speed recovery. Dr. Waltor Powys, formerly with the United States Air Force, noted that the laboratory animals recovered faster when some matters were added to their food. One of these matters was zinc. Dr. Powys later tested the zinc treatment on an American airman recovering from medical operations. The airman who received zinc sulphate (硫酸盐) recovered in half of the usual time. Other doctors studied persons who had a number of strange disorders. The doctors learned that all of these problems were caused by lack of zinc in the body. They treated these disorders successfully by giving the patients zinc sulphate.
The amount of zinc in the body can be found by examining blood and hair. A lack of this important element is not uncommon among people in both industrial and developing countries. Zinc is found in most high protein (蛋白质) foods, such as meat milk, fish and eggs. It is also found in whole grains. But many people do not eat enough of these foods. Food markets should add these elements so that more people could get needed amount of these necessary matters.

In October, 1961. at Crowley Field in Cincinnati, Ohio, an old, deaf gentleman named William E Hey stood up to throw the first ball of the World Series. Most people at Crowley Field on that day probably did not remember Hoy because he had retired (退休) from professional baseball 58 years earlier, in 1903. However, he had been an outstanding player and the deaf people still talk about him and his years in baseball.
William E. Hoy was horn in Houckstown, Ohio, on May 23, 1862. He became deaf when he was two years old. He attended the Columbus Ohio School for the deaf. After graduation, he started playing baseball while working as a shoemaker.
Hoy began playing professional baseball in 1886 for Oshkosh (Wisconsin) of the Northwestern League. In 1888, he started as an outfielder (外场手) with the old Washington Senators. His small figure and speed made him an outstanding base runner. He was very good at stealing bases during his career. In the 1888 major league season, he stole 82 bases. He was also the Senators' leading hitter in 1888. Hoy was clever; he threw right-handed and batted left-handed. On June 19, 1889, he threw out three batters (击球手) at the plate from his outfield position.
The arm signals used by judges today to show balls and strikes began because of Hoy. The judge lifted his right arm to show that the pitch was a strike, and his left arm to signal that it was a ball.
For many years, people talked about Hoy's last ball game in 1903. He was playing for Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast Winter League. It was a memorable game because Hoy made a wonderful play which won the game. It was a very foggy night and, therefore, very hard to see the ball. In the ninth inning (棒球的一局), with two men out, Hoy managed to catch a fly ball to make the third out in spite of the fog. Ms Angeles defeated their opposition and won the game.
After he retired, Hoy stayed busy. He ran a dairy farm near Cincinnati for 20 years. He also became a public speaker and traveled giving speeches. Until a few years before his death, he took 4 and 10 mile walks several mornings a week. On December 15, 1961, William Hoy died at the age of 99

Americans are proud of their variety and individuality (个性), yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of a lift operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?
Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian (百姓的) clothes. People have become conditioned to expect higher quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform is likely to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a hairdresser, or a waiter to lose professional identity (职业身份) than to step out of uniform?
Uniforms also have many practical good points. They are often more comfortable and more lasting than civilian clothes.
Primary among the argument against uniforms is their lack of variety and the loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they are likely to think, speak, and act similarly on the job at least.
Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.
71. What surprises us is that Americans _______.
A. still judge a man by his clothes
B. think highly of uniforms
C. less prefer wearing civilian clothes
D. respect a lift operator in uniform

ZHUHAI---China will soon put a person into space and become the third nation in the world to have manned spaceflight, a top Chinese aerospace (航空航天) official said on November 5.
A manned launch(发射) was not far off, Vice President Hu Hongfu China Aerospace Science Technology Corp (CASTC) told a news conference at the third Zhuhai Air Show . "It will not be long before Chinese astronauts can ride locally-made spaceships into space," Hu said. The official gave no timetable but said it would happen "at beginning of the 21st century."
The former Soviet Union and the United States have been putting people into orbit since the early 1960s, but other nations have not considered the challenge worth following.
China has already built and sent up its own satellites for communications and weather forecasting. The new communication satellites would help to encourage the country's broadcasting industry, Hu said.
But the company, which includes over 130 aerospace agencies, said the lifting ability and success rate of China's space-launches were almost equal in quality to those of other countries.
China would gradually close the distance between its country's space industry and that of other nations. He added that they were willing to send up commercial satellites for Taiwan.
On China's plan to send up manned spaceflights, Hu said China had made important development after the successful launch in November last year of the country's first experimental spaceship, Shenzhou. Advertising gives useful information about which products to buy. But modern advertising does more than gives news about products and services. Today's advertisements, or ads, try to get consumers(消费者) to buy certain brands(品牌) .Writers of advertising are so skillful that they can sometimes persuade a consumer to wear a certain kind of clothing, eat a special kind of cereal(麦片), or see a movie . Consumers might never even want a product if they did not see or hear advertisements for it.
For example, you probably do not need the newest cereal in the supermarket. There are probably many cereal brands on your kitchen shelves. You nay not have space on your shelf for another. But if you see ads about a new cereal that is your extra -tasty and has a free prize in the box, you may want it. Advertising must get attention. To be effective, it must be exciting, entertaining, or provide some pleasure. The secret of writing good advertising copy is to offer a good idea as well as a product. The idea is what the ad is really selling. One example is an ad that says eating a certain cereal will make a person do well in sports. That cereal brand may sell better if consumers think it offers strength and energy.

A. modern advertising has less effect on customers
B. once customers see ads about a new cereal, they are sure to buy it

71. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Customers can easily be persuaded by advertisements.
B. Customers should be persuaded by advertisements.
C. It's impossible for customers to buy a product without advertisements.
D. Customers buy products according to their demands rather than the advertisements.

Taxes, Taxes and More Taxes
Americans often say that there are only two things a person can be sure of in life; death and taxes. Americans do not have a corner on the "death" market, but many people feel that the United States leads the world with the worst taxes.
Taxes consist of the money which people pay to support their government. There are generally three levels of government in the United States: federal (联邦), state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes.
Salaried people who earn more than a few thousand dollars must pay a certain percentage of their salaries to the federal government. The percentage varies (变化不同) form person to person. It depends on their salaries. The federal government has a graduated income tax, that is, the percentage of the tax (14 to 70 percent) increases as a person's income increases. With the high cost of taxes people are not very happy on April 15, when the federal taxes are due.
The second tax is for the state government: New York, California, North Dakota, or any of the other forty-seven states. Some states have an income tax similar to that of the federal government. Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower. Other states have a sales tax, which is a percentage charged to any item(项目) which you buy in that state. For example, a person might want to buy a packet of cigarettes for twenty -five cents. If there is a sales tax of eight percent in that state, then the cost of the cigarettes is twenty -seven cents. This figure includes the sales tax. Some states use income tax in addition to sales tax to raise their revenues (收入) . The state tax laws are diverse (多样) and confusing (混淆).
The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property tax (people who own a home have to pay taxes on it) and excise (国产) tax, which is charged on cars in a city. The cities use these funds (资金) for education, police and fire departments, public works and municipal (市政内) buildings.
Since Americans pay such high taxes, they often feel that they are working one day each week just to pay their taxes. People always complain about taxes. They often protest that the government uses their tax dollars in the wrong way. They say that it spends too much on useless and impractical programs. Although Americans have different views on many issues (问题) , they tend to agree on one subject: taxes are too high.
72. How do you understand the sentence "Americans do not have a corner on the 'death' market"?
A. It means that Americans, just like all other people, must die.
B. It means that Americans do not have a secret place to keep from death in their life.
C. It means that Americans are not good at doing business in the death market.
D. It means that there is no such place as a death market in the U. S .
73. Why should the American people usually pay three types of taxes?
A. There are three levels of government -federal, state and city -to support the United States.
B. There are three kinds of taxes to pay, They are graduated income tax, sales tax and property tax.
C. They earn different salaries: high, middle, and low
D. Tax laws in different states are different.
74. What does the title "Taxes, Taxes, and More Taxes" imply?
A. Americans are not satisfied with the three types of taxes.
B. The three levels of government do not use the taxes in a right way.
C. Americans complain that taxes are too high.
D. Americans' taxes are diverse and confusing.

The majority of astronauts(宇航员)from America have been men. At the start of the space programme there was strong resistance from some people against having women in space. However, some women were very keen to become astronauts and in the end they were successful. In 1978, NASA began the first training programme for women astronauts.
Judy Resnick and Christa McAuliffe were both astronauts and they were both women, but in many other ways they were very different. Both of them were on Flight STS-5L-L. Judy Resnick was born in 1949 and studied engineering at university and went on to obtain a PhD in 1977. She was a member of the first group of women selected for astronaut training in 1978, and in 1984, she became the second woman in space. During that flight, she helped to launch three new satellites and she carried out a programme of research. She was, in many ways, a professional astronaut whose whole life was devoted to space travel.
Christa McAuliffe was born in 1948 and she was an astronaut almost by accident. In 1984, NASA decided to find a teacher who could accompany astronauts into space. They hoped that she would be able to communicate with students from space and encourage every one of them to be interested in space travel. Christa was a secondary teacher in history and social studies. She was a gifted teacher and she was selected from over 11,000 applicants to go on flight STS-51-L. She was also a very good communicator and she immediately established a very good relationship with the news media(radio, television and newspapers). It was partly because of this that there was a great deal of interest and excitement about the flight. Thousands of students in schools and universities all around the country were looking forward to communicating with Christa in space. Millions of people were watching her flight with great interest. It is partly because of the excitement over McAuliffe's place in the flight that the disaster in 1986 had such an effect on people.

Most episodes(情况)of absent- mindedness- forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room-are caused by a simple lack of attention, says Schacter. "You're supposed to remember something, but you haven't encoded (译成密码)it deeply."
Encoding, Schacter explains, is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact(影响)on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don't pay attention to what you did because you're involved in a conversation, you'll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe(衣柜). "Your memory itself isn't failing you,"says Schacter."Rather, you didn't give your memory system the information it needed."
Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness."A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago,"says Zelinski,"may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox."Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory depends on just that.
"Visual cues can help prevent absent -mindedness",says Schacter."But be sure the cue is clear and available,"he cautions. If you want to remember to take a medication(药物)with lunch, put the pill bottle on the kitchen table-don't leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.
Another common episode of absent-mindedness: walking into a room and wondering why you're there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else. "Everyone does this from time to time,"says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you'll likely remember.
64. We can learn from the passage that encoding ________.

D. helps us to find out the mobile phone in the pocket

We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.
Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity(机会)and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed - no examination is perfect - but to have no external( 外部的 )tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in external examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on the efficiency(实力),the ideal and the purpose of each teacher.
Without external examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them - a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from an ill - respected school can show certificates(证书)to prove he or she is suitable for a job, while the lack of a certificate shows the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well - respected school. This defence of excellence and opportunity would disappear if external examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her school's fame(名誉),unable to compete for employment with the child from the favoured school.
The opponents(对手)of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different, academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer.
These people are not just against school organisation, but are at war with the whole idea of modem competitive society and they are using children in schools for their destructive(破坏性的)purposes. There is no reason why we should allow such people to determine the way our schools are organised when it is to the obvious disadvantage of the pupils, of the schools and of our society as a whole.
68. According to the passage, the writer thinks that ________.
A. changing the standards could mean the end of equality

C. there would be no standards without external examinations
D. we cannot have standards because examinations are not perfect
69. In the writer's opinion, what would happen if external examinations were taken away?
A. There would be no more opportunities and no more excellence.
B. Children from poor families would not be able to change schools.

D. Schools for bright children would lose their fame.
70. The situation at the moment is that ________.
A. many children who are suitable for a job have no proof of their suitability
B. a school's fame is not important, as long as a child has a certificate.
C. children attending well - respected schools need not get certificates.
D. a bright child doesn't need a certificate a t all to get a good job.

A. Most students from poor families can't get a good job.

He works 10 hours a day, makes more than US $98000 a year, doesn't bother to take holidays, dresses as he pleases, he's never been happier and is looking for another job. This 33-year-old, white, university-educated person is the typical Internet worker, according to a study by the Internet Standard, a San Francisco news magazine.
There is also a reasonable chance that his employer will arrange his dry cleaning, allow him to bring his dog to work, offer him free massages(按摩) and give him stock options(股票自由买卖权).And he still thinks people in other firms are doing better.
The typical worker, it appears, not only enjoys an income about three times the national average but also enjoys himself. At present 2. 5 million people are employed by Internet firms in the US. The results of the study give plenty of reasons why so many people think the grass is greener in Silicon Valley(硅谷).
Even after tech stocks sharply went down in April, closing many star - ups, there is still a mood of enthusiasm(热情)and special advantage among those still employed. So what makes 52 percent of them "very happy"?"Demanding work"is given as the main reason and "salary"is unsurprisingly close behind. Those questioned in the study also listed working weekends and long holidays as signs of the pleasures of the workplaces.
Only 13 percent were paid for the extra hours worked while 14 percent put in more than 12 hours work on an average day. "It wasn't all about money"wrote Maryann Thompson in the introduction to the study,"It was fun. What other job could a college and graduate walk into at 10 a. m. wearing shorts and sandals?"And spend days with his dog at his feet, working on projects that required real brain power- then leave at 9 p. m. with a belly full of free food, a few happy - hour beers and a big fat check? The average income works out at $104000 with the average basic salary at $84700.

It was at least two months before Christmas when nineyear old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle. As Christmas drew nearer, her desire for a bicycle seemed to fade, or so we thought. We bought the latest rage, BabySitter's Club dolls, and a doll house. Then, much to our surprise, on December 23rd, she said that she “really wanted a bike more than anything else.” It was just too late , what with all the details of preparing Christmas dinner and buying lastminute gifts, to take the time to select the “right bike” for our little girl. So, here we were Christmas Eve around 9:00 p.m., with Almie and her six-year-old brother, Dylan, nestled snug in their beds. Now we could only think of the bicycle and the disappointment of our child.” What if I make a little bicycle out of clay (泥) and write a note that she could trade the clay model in for a real bike?” her dad asked. “This is an expensive item and she is ‘such a big girl,' it would be much better for her to pick it out.” So he spent the next four hours painstakingly working with clay to make a tiny bike. On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little hear shaped package with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud. “Does this mean that I trade in this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?” Beaming, I said, “Yes.” Almie had tears in her eyes when she replied, “I could never trade in this beautiful bicycle that Daddy made me. I'd rather keep this than get a real bike.” At that moment, we would have moved heaven and earth to buy her every bicycle on the planet!

Disposing (处理)of waste has been a problem since humans started producing it. As more and more people choose to live close together in cities, the wastedisposal problem becomes in-creasingly difficult. During the eighteenth century, it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a faraway spot as a dump site. Residents or trash haulers(垃圾拖运者) would transport household rubbish, rotted wood, and old possessions to the site. Periodically some of the trash was burned and the rest was buried. The unpleasant sights and smells caused no problem because nobody lived close by. Factories, mills, and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of. Those located on rivers often just dumped the unwanted remains into the water. Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal with the problem. Several facts make these choices unacceptable to modern society. The first problem is space. Dumps, which are now called landfills, are most needed in heavily populated areas. Such areas rarely have empty land suitable for this purpose. Property is either too expensive or too close to residential neighborhoods. Longdistance trash hauling has been a common practice, but once farm areas are refusing to accept rubbish from elsewhere, cheap land within trucking distance of major city areas is almost nonexistent. Awareness (意识) of pollution dangers has resulted in more strict rules of waste disposal. Pollution of rivers, ground water, land and air is a price people cannot longer pay to get rid of waste. The amount of waste, however, continues to grow.
Recycling efforts have become commonplace, and many towns require their people to take part. Even the most efficient recycling programs, however, can hope to deal with only about 50 percent of a city's reusable waste.

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are over concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?
It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. Adperson’s selfconcept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep affect on all areas of their lives. Shy people ,have low self-esteem(自尊),are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑).They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise .A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one:” You’re just saying that to make me feel good .I know it's not true.” It is clear that, while selfawareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely got rid of ,or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination. It is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths, for example, not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have to be realistic. Living on the impossible leads to absence of inferiority. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves. the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.
72The first paragraph is mainly about

74What is the shy people's reaction to praise?
AThey are pleased by it
BThey feel it is not true
CThey are very sensitive to it
DThey feel thty are worthy of it
75We can learn from the passage that shyness can
Ahelp us to live up to our full development
Benable us to understand ourselves better
Cblock our chances for a successful life
Dhave nothing to do with lack of self esteem

Foulsham House is a fine, stone house of the 1790s. It stands high above the River Byre, in twenty five hectares(公顷) of the best farmland in the south-west.Smithson built the house, and the story goes that George, the young Prince(王子)of Wales, fell in love with the beautiful lady Kitty Wake, at one of the first,Lord Foulsham's wild parties. American society is not nap(午睡)friendly. In fact, says David Dinges, a sleep specialist at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine,“There's even a prohibition(禁令) against admitting we need sleep.”Nobody wants to be caught napping or found asleep at work. To quote(引用)a proverb:“Some sleep five hours, nature requires seven, laziness nine and wickedness eleven.”Wrong. The way not to fall asleep at work is to take naps when you need them.“We have to totally change our attitude toward napping,”says Dr William Dement of Stanford University, the godfather of sleep research.Last year a national commission led by Dement identified an“American sleep debt” which one member said was as important as the national debt. The commission was concerned about the dangers of sleepiness: people causing industrial accidents of falling asleep while driving. This may be why we have a new
sleep policy in the White House. According to recent reports, President Clinton is trying to take a halfhour snooze(打瞌睡)every afternoon.
About 60 percent of American adults nap when given the opportunity. We seem to have “a mid-afternoon quiet phase(状态局面)”,also called “a secondary sleep gate”. Sleeping 15 minutes to two hours in the early afternoon can reduce stress and make us refreshed. Clearly, we were born to nap.
We Superstars of Snooze don't nap to replace lost shuteye or to prepare for a night shift. Rather, we snack on sleep, whenever, wherever and at whatever time we feel like it. I myself have napped in buses, cars, planes and on boats; on floors and beds; and in libraries, offices and museums.

The World Trade Organization(WTO),founded on January 1, 1995,aims to encourage international trade to flow as possible, making sure that trade agreements are respected and that any disputes(争端)can be settled.
In the five years since its founding, the WTO has become wellknown as one of the world's most powerful economic organizations, taking its place alongside the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
The system of global rules for international trade, however, dates back half a century to 11948 when the Ceneral Agreement on Tariffs(关税)and Trade(GATT)was formed after World War Ⅱ.
As time went by, it became clear that the GATT had two major drawbacks——the limited areas of trade it covered, and the lack of an effective system to settle disputes.
After seven years of trade talks ending in 1994, the socalled Uruguay Round finally gave birth to the WTO, complete with an effective system to settle disputes and new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property(知识产权).
Even after seven years of talks and 22,500 pages of agreements there were still problems, especially the difficulttodealwith areas of agriculture and services, which the member nations agreed to revise in 2000.The WTO, with its head office in Geneva, has 135 members with 30 more waiting to join.

Convenience Foods
Instead of buying only fresh foods, Americans nowadays buy many more convenience foods. These are foods which are ready partly or completely prepared. Many of them are frozen ,such as frozen dinner, heatedserve French fries, and frozen pizzas. There are also many canned convenience foods, such as ready made spaghetti, soups, stews, and vegetables.
Convenience foods save time and trouble. They are popular with people who are busy or who don't like to cook or wash dishes. But they often cost more than fresh, unprepared foods and may contain manmade additives. Also, many people feel they don't taste as good as homecooked foods.
Health Food and Coops
In the 1960s, a “backtotheearth”movement was started by young people in the United States. The movement was a reaction against the harmful effects of technology. From the movement came a new understanding for food and health. Many people now prefer natural and organic(有机物)foods to the prepared foods sold in health food stores and in food coops, which are small stores where customers help manage the store. In coops, food is usually not packaged. Customers bring their own bags and jars and take their food out of boxes or basket.
The Diet Craze(节食热)
These days Americans are more and more concerned with their weight. Perhaps as many as 70 million Americans are on weightdollar business.
American supermarkets sell a variety of diet foods such as diet soft drinks, diet candy, and diet salad dressings. Dieters also spend money on diet pills, exercise machines, and jogging suits(健美服).Each year dozens of new diets are popularized. They have such names as the Miracle(奇效的)Diet, the Nine day Wonder Diet, and the East 24hour Diet. There is even one called the lce Cream Diet, which advises dieters to eat only ice cream for lunch and dinner! For dieters who can not lose weight on their own, there are many wellorganized diet groups, which offer help and encouragement.

Most of the people who appear most often in the history books are great conquerors(征服者)and generals and soldiers, while the people who really helped civilization(文明)forward are often never mentioned at all.
We do not know who first set a broken leg, or made a seaworthy boat, or calculated(计算)the length of the year, but we know all about the killers and destroyers. People think a great deal of them, so much so that on all the highest pillars(柱子) in the great cities of the world you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general or a soldier. And I think most people believe that the greatest countries are those that have beaten in the battle the greatest number of other countries and ruled over them as conquerors.
It is just possible they are, but they are not the most civilized. Animals fight; so do savages(野蛮人); so to be good at fighting is to be good in the way in which an animal or a savage is good, but it is not to be civilized. Even being good at getting other people to fight for you and telling them how to do it most efficiently——this, after all, is what conquerors and generals have done——is not being civilized. People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting means killing, and civilized people ought to be able to find some way of settling their quarrels rather than by seeing which side can kill off the greater number of the other side, and then saying that the side which has killed most has won, and not only has won, but, because it has won, has been in the right. For that is what is going to mean in a war, it means saying that might is right.
73In the author's opinion, the countries that ruled over a large number
of other countries are .
Apossibly the most civilized but not the greatest
Bpossibly the greatest in some degree but not the most civilized
Ccertainly not the greatest in any way
Dneither the greatest nor the most civilized
74The author says that civilized people should .
Anot have any quarrels to settle
Bnot fight when there are no quarrels to settle
Csettle their quarrels without fighting
Dsettle their quarrels by seeing which side can kill off the greater number of the other side
75“Might is right”in the last sentence means that .

Bonly those who are powerful should go to war
Cthose who are right should fight against those who are wrong

One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to ambit one's mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that,” and it is even harder to say, “I was wrong, and you were right about that.” I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a cartons(纸箱).Then he talked of an in cadent and I began to remember the incident he was describing.
I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that particular day,I must have found my way to the food department where the incident took place.

For some reason, I decided it was up to to me to put the cartons back together, so I went to work.
The manager heard the noise and same pushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared,I was on my knees checking some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the person who was to blame. It seems strange that while three-quarters of the world's surface is covered with water, getting an adequate (充足的)supply of it that's fresh, clean, and safe to use for drinking, cooking and washing, is one of the most important problems that faces humanity. Most of the earth’s water is salt water in the oceans, only three per cent is fresh and only a small part of that is possible. It may be trapped deep underground, and anyway unequally exist around the globe, so the happening of droughts and floods. Of the remaining fresh water, much is polluted and dangerous to use.
A large part of UNICEFs work is bringing safe water to people and educating them in basic health care. Some diseases spread by polluted water are the most common causes of death and illness in children under five in the developing world.
Although water gives life, it can also carry some kinds of disease- a leading cause of blindness among children. Mosquitoes, and flies that live near in water bring yellow fever, malaria(疟疾) and sleeping sickness, so good piped water supplies are needed to reduce the need for people to gather in such an area. In the country, women and children a major part of their time going out to collect water, often walk many miles each day to provide just the limited family needs for cooking, washing and drinking. And they can't carry much while walking over rough fields bearing a heavy bucket.
Because children have to play their part in family life, and that includes getting water, they may be unable to go to school, or be so tired when get there that have difficulty learning. They may even have to spend the whole day without a drink as may mot be any clean water there, either.
Last year, UNICEF(联合国儿童基金会) aimed to get almost 90,000 water systems setup, to benefit 20 million people, working where it is most badly needed, often just to ensure keeping alive. A well may woman the difference between life and death.
63What is the main reason for the inadequate supply of fresh water?

Why does cream go bad faster than butter? Some researchers think they have the answer, and it comes down to the structure(结构) of the food, not its chemical composition (成份)—a finding that could help break away from some chemicals. Cream and butter contain pretty much the same things, so why cream should go bad much faster has been a problem. Both are small globules(小球) of one liquid spread throughout another. The difference lies in what's in the globules and what's in the surrounding liquid, says Brocklehurst, who led the research. In careen, fatty globules drift about in a sea of water. In butter, globules of a watery road are locked away in a sea of fat. The bacteria(细菌) which make the food go bad prefer to live in the watery areas of the mixture. “This means that in cream, the
bacteria are free to grow throughout the mixture,” he says. When in butter, the bacteria are locked away in locked places buried deep in the sea of fat. Trapped in this way, those colonies cannot spread and rapidly run out. They also slowly poison themselves with their waste products.” In butter, you get a self-limiting system which stops the bacteria growing,” says Brocklehurst. The researchers are already working with food companies eager to see if their products can be made to stand bacterial attack through changes of the food's structure.
Brocklehurst believes it will be possible to make something changes of the for instance, more like that in butter, The key will be possible to make something used in salad cream liquid and mot taming like it into a solid state.
67The significance of Brocklehurst's research is that.
Ait suggested a way to keep some foods fresh without using some chemicals

My son and I were trying to sell the house we had repaired but in the barn(谷仓)there were bats(蝙蝠)and they would not leave. The barn was their home. They told us so in their own way. They hung there in the barn and seemed determined to stay for the season. Don't worry about it, Dad, " Patrick said. They keep down the mosquitoes(蚊子).”
Unfortunately they also kept the buyers away. when we had asked a person to sell the house for us he had refused to show it because of the bats. Bats are popular, "Patrick comforted me. They're ecological(生态学的)."Isn't there a machine you can buy that produces highfrequency sounds to keep bats away?” I don't know,” said Patrick. But I like bats, and whoever buys this house will probably like them too."”Probably?"I hated that word. How many bats are there ,anyway?" I counted about 90 last night," said Patrick. They were dropping out from under the edge of the roof." You mean there are more—outside?" They're everywhere, Dad. But look at it this way. When the cold weather comes, they’ll be off to Mexico. Maybe in the spring we can keep them out. Don't worry about it,” he said for the hundredth time. It's not a problem."
The bat expert I called was even more active than Patrick. I think you've got a large number there,” he said in wonder, I’ve been trying to attract bats to our house for 25 years A single bat eats up his weight in mosquitoes and black flies three times every night. You're a very lucky man.” I offered to share my luck with him. He could take them away. Bats have a remarkable homing instinct(本能),"he said. They'd fly straight
back even if I transported them 100 miles. Once they have settled, you can't stop them from coming back." I was silent.
Finally we managed to rent “(出租)the house to a young family, who were also interested in buying it. What about the bats?" I said to Patrick.
Oh, they love the bats,” he said. No mosquitoes. No black flies. It's one of the things that attracted them." Do you think they will really buy the bouse? "Probably." Probably? Well,if they do ,I suppose I'll have to admit that I was wrong. "You mean you're going to eat your words?"
Yes, I am."

DHe should close the barn in the spring.
58Why did the author fall silent when he talked with the bat specialist?
AHe felt sure about the situation.
BHe found out that it would be impossible to remove the bats.
CHe learned that he would be able to share his luck with the expert.
DHe liked the advice given by the expert.

Martin is a man of all trades and of many experiences. He never stays at one job for more than six months and never leaves the job of his own will. He is not actually lazy or unfit and his employers(雇主)can not be said to be unreasonable. He is only, according to one of his former employers, too eager for the work that his employer hasn't the intention(打算)to let him do. One fact about Martin is that he never waits long to find a new job. Last month, he was fired again. Mr. King, the owner of a small shop hired him to paint his new house. He readily accepted the job without a word. When later Mr. King went to see how things were going on there, he couldn't find Martin. Instead he saw four workmen carefully painting the wall. “What's the matter?” he wondered.
“Hi, Mr. King!” he heard Martin's voice calling from behind. “They are working hard, aren't they?” Mr. King turned back. He saw Martin smiling at him.” What’s happened, Martin? And why are these workers here?”Mr. King asked.“I've hired them at 8 dollars for each man.”Martin told him happily.“But I will only pay 30 dollars for the whole work.”Mr. King couldn't understand.“I know, Mr. King. Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labour through your work you may say that you're “hot”. That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak(顶峰).For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar words as :“Get up, John! You'll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperatureandenergy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract(对抗)your cycle by staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam(拿出干劲) and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a yawn(呵欠) and stretch (伸懒腰). Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Whenever possible, do routine(常规的) work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.
72If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably.
Ahe is a lazy person
Bhe refuses to follow his own energy cycle
Che is not sure when his energy is low
Dhe is at his perk in the afternoon or evening

passage?
AHaving no knowledge of energy cycle.

Cget up earlier than usual
Dgo to bed earlier
75You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will .

Dolphins (海豚) are not fish, but warm-blooded animals. They live in groups, and speak to each other in their own language. In this they are like other animals, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals. Their brain is nearly the same size as our own, and they live a long time - at least twenty or thirty years.
Like some animals, dolpins use sound to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw.
Strangely, dolphins seem to like man, and for thousands of years there have been stories about the dolphin and its friendship with people.
There is a story about sailors in the 19th century. In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learnt to look for a dolphin called Jack. From 1871 to 1903 Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. Then in 1903 a passenger on a boat called The penguin shot and wounded Jack. He recovered and for nine years more continued to guide all ships through the area-except for The Penguin.
Today, some people continue to kill dolphins, but many countries of the world now protect them and in these places it is against the law to kill them.

Some time ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn't think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique(古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception(接待). I was quite wrong. The man wouldn't even look at my chair.
The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth-so I decided that my approach must be wrong.
I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, "Would you like to buy a chair?" He looked it over carefully and said, "Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir?" "Twenty pounds," I said. "OK," he said, "I'll give you twenty pounds." "It's got a slightly broken leg," I said. "Yes, I saw that, it's nothing."
Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited. "What will you do with it?" I asked. "Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done." "I'll buy it," I said. "What do you mean? You've just sold it to me," he said. "Yes, I know but I've changed my mind. I am sorry. I'll give you twenty-seven pounds for it." "You must be crazy," he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. "I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair." "You're right," I said. "And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ' Would you mean this chair for me?' " "I wouldn't have agreed to do it," he said. "We don't do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I'll mend this for you, shall we say for a fiver?" After a busy day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the day. The rest that you get while sleeping makes it possible for your body to prepare itself for the next day.
There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your body relaxes (放松) little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body shifts (变换) back and forth from one level of sleep to the other.
Tlthough your mind slows down, you will dream from time to time. Scientists who study sleep point out that when dreaming occurs, your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement.
If you have trouble falling asleep, some people recommend (建议) breathing very slowly and very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that counting sheep will put you to sleep.

Be careful about those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression.
For example, someone might say, "I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!"
This guy's a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!
He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Untrustworthy candidates (竞选者) in political campaigns often use this tactic (策略). Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents (对手) runs an ad saying, "During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs!" That's true. However an honest statement would have been, "During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs."
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might say, "Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples." It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.
This kind of deception happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
56. Which statement is true according to the article?
A. There is no 100-percent truth. B. A truth is as dishonest as a lie.
C. Lies are lies, and truths are lies, too. D. The truth can be used in dishonest ways.
57. The underlined word deceive is close in meaning to _____________.
A. pretend B. hide C. fool D. sell
58. The best title for this passage should be _____________.
A. A Special Lie B. How to Discover a Lie
C. Half-truths D. White Lies

Some inventions are so useful, but seem so simple, that we wonder why no one thought of them long ago. Post-it Notes - the pieces of paper that you can fasten almost anywhere and then remove without leaving any sign that they were there - are an example of such an invention.
Post-it Notes were invented about twenty years ago by Art Fry, a scientist at 3M Corporation. The idea for the product came from a frustrating (令人沮丧的) experience he often had while singing in his church choir(唱诗班). Fry used pieces of paper as bookmarks to mark the places in his book of songs, but these bookmarks were always falling out. He knew he needed a bookmark that would stay where he put it, but that he could remove without damaging the pages.
Around that time, Fry heard about a new adhesive (粘合剂) that a colleague (同事), Dr. Spence Silver, had created. This adhesive was special because it was sticky, but not too sticky. It was strong enough to hold papers together, but weak enough to not tear the paper when it was removed. Fry saw that the new adhesive could help solve his bookmark problem. One morning, Fry put some of the adhesive on the edge of a piece of paper. Just as he hoped, it made a perfect bookmark..
A short time later, Fry realized that his new invention had even more uses than being a great bookmark. He came to this realization when he wrote a note on one of his new "bookmarks" and attached (附着) it to a report he was going to give to a colleague. Soon, co-workers were asking Fry for more samples of his invention so that they could use the new type of notes themselves.
Fry and some other people at 3M believed so much in the new product that they persuaded the company to give away thousands of the "sticky pieces of paper" for trial use. When some salespeople at 3M went to offices and showed workers just how helpful the new type of notes could be, they immediately received many orders. As more and more people discovered how useful Post-it Notes could be, the product took off.

D. He cooperated with Art by providing the new adhesive for Art.

Read these two advertisements, and then answer the questions.
When you stretch out in the sun you can do one of three things.
You can use no sun tan oil. You can use an ordinary sun tan oil. Or you can use Bergasol.
If you don’t use any sun tan oil at all when you’re in sun that is stronger than you’re used to, you will burn surprisingly quickly.
If you use an ordinary sun tan oil you will protect your skin to a lesser or greater degree. How much depends on the ‘protection-factor (系数) number’ on the bottle.
Some of these oils block out so many of the sun’s rays you can stay in the sun all day without burning—but you won’t go very brown, either.
Bergasol will protect your skin like an ordinary sun tan oil. But Bergasol oil also has a tan accelerator (加速剂) which comes from the oil of the Bergamot fruit.
It speeds up the rate at which the sun acitvates the skin cells that produce melanin.
And it is melanin which gives the skin its brown colour.
So when you use Bergasol sun tan oil you go brown faster, and as the days pass the difference will become more and more obvious.
Unfortunately this special formulation isn’t cheap to prepare. So Bergasol is rather more expensive than ordinary sun tan oil.
However the price looks more attractive as you do.

"It was all his own idea," says Pat Peters, the 38-year-old wife of Palo Alto, California high school football coach Bob Peters, 39. Bob had just drawn up a "motherhood contract"-a document (文件) stating that for 70 days this summer he would take over the care and feeding of the couple's four children, plus all household chores(杂务). Although he didn't even know how to make coffee when he signed, he was quite confident. (He thought the experience would make a nice book.)
After 40 of the 70 days, he was ready to give up. "I was beaten down, completely humbled," admits Peters. Three weeks later he spoke to the local press (also part of the bargain), stating, "Not only is motherhood a difficult task, not only is it never-ending, it is an impossible job for any normal human being."
Bob and Pat were high school sweethearts. After they were married in 1960, she worked as a secretary to help put him through university. Since then Bob has been the football and wrestling coach at Palo Alto's Cubberley High while Pat raised the kids.
Then two years ago Pat went back to work as a secretary at Cubberley. "I had been around children so much," she sighs (叹气), "I couldn't talk to a grown-up." She continued to run the household, however-until Bob signed the contract, whereupon she decided to relax and enjoy it.
Although Peters had consulted (咨询) with his school's home economics teachers and the head of the cafeteria (食堂), his meals were sometimes a disaster. "I tried to slip the butter I'd forgotten under the eggs after they were frying," he says. For the last three weeks, the family ate out a lot-sometimes having Macdonald's hamburgers for lunch and dinner.

In America, drivers’ education is part of the regular high school curriculum.Every student in his or her second year of high school is required to take a class in driver’s education. However,
unlike other courses,it is not given during the regular school year.Instead it is a summer course.
The course is divided up into two parts:class time for learning laws and regulations and driving time to practise driving.Class time is not unlike any other class. The students have a text from which they study the basic laws they must know to pass the written driving test that is given to anyone wanting to get a driver’s license.
Driving time is a chance for the students to get behind the wheel (steering wheel) and practise starting steering, backing up,parking, switching lanes, turning corners, and all the other maneuvers (操作) required to drive a car. Each student is required to drive a total of six hours. The students are divided up into groups of four. The students and the instructor go out driving for twohour blocks of time. Thus, each student gets half an hour driving time per outing. The instructor and “driver” sit in the front seats and the other three students sit in the back.
Drivers Ed cars are unlike other cars in which they have two sets of brakes, one on the driver’s side and one on the other side where the instructor sits. Thus,if the student driver should run into difficulties the instructor can take over. The car also has another special feature. On the top of the car is a sign that reads:STUDENT DRIVER.That lets nearby drivers know that they should use extra caution(小心) because the student driver is a beginning driver, not very experenced and prone to driving slowly.
After the student has passed the driver’s education course and reached the appropriate age to drive(this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old),they can go to a designated state office to take their driver’s test, which is made up of an eye examination,a written test, and a road test. The person must pass all three tests in order to be given a driver’s license. If the person did well in his or her driver’s education class,he or she will pass the test with flying colors and get a driver’s license.
56.In America,the driver’s course mentioned above .

C.They must have their eyes examined.
D.They ought to do well in their driver’s course.
60.In the last sentence,“with flying colors” means .

Greenspace facilities (设施) are contributing to an important degree to the quality of the city environment.Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea.At present it is generally accepted, although more as a self proved statement than on the base of a closely reasoned scientific proof.Recognizing the importance of greenspaces in the city environment is a first step on the right way, this does not mean, however, that enough details are known about the functions of greenspace in towns and about the way in which people are using these spaces. As to this subject I shall within the scope of this lecture, enter into one aspect(方面) only, namely the recreative function of greenspace facilities.
The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation which for many years has been used in town and country planning, has in my opinion resulted in more attention for forms of recreation far from home, while there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the direct neighbourhood of the home.We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working,is used for activities at and around home.So it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street door of the house. The city environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more required activities can also have recreative aspect.
The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district,if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets because the risks of traffic are too great,if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather,in short,if you only feel yourself at home after the street door of your house is closed after you.

A.to reduce the number of recreative activities
B.to attract more and more people
C.for people to use more conveniently
D.for people to do recreative activities at the street door of the house
64.The main idea of this passage is that .
A.attention must be paid to the improvement of recreation
B.greenspace facilities should be used better to improve the quality of life
C.the city environment is providing more recreative activites
D.we should try our best to raise our living standard

This is a true story.Rex White knows too many seamen’s stories to want to add to them.Besides, this happened on land.It happened in Lytham,a town on the River Ribble, near to the place where the river flows into the Irish Sea.The shape of the trees along the Lytham beach road is proof of the great strength of the wind which comes in off the sea.It blows hard across the grass, the car-parks and the open road beside the river, and there is nothing to stop it.Rex White was a ship’s pilot. It was his job to guide ships up the river, between banks of sand, into the port of Preston.Mr White lived in a village some kilometers from the coast,so he had to drive to Lytham and leave his car in one of the car-parks beside the river. Then he used to row out to the pilot boat, and await the particular ship that it was his duty to guide.
Early one morning,Mr White returned to Lytham from a night on duty,to find that he could not start his car.He had driven from his village the evening before, and had left his car in the car-park as usual. He had rowed out to the pilot boat, and gone on board the S.S.Kilkenny,which was on her way from Ireland. Then,in the early hours of the following morning,he had returned to Lytham in the pilot boat, expecting to drive home to a cup of hot chocolate and a warm bed.But no matter what he did,he could not get the engine to sart.
It was a cold and windy night;there was no one about, and here was no garage open to which he could turn for help.He was just about to give up,and spend the rest of the night on the back seat of the car, when he had a bright idea.He pushed his car round so that it was facing in the direction of the wind, opened all four doors, pushed it along a short way,and then jumped in.The doors acted like sails, and in no time the wind had taken him right out of the car-park,and away down the beach road. When he tried the starter-switch once more, the engine roared to life immediately. All he had to do then was to stop the car and shut the doors.
He went to bed later than usual, but he did not go without his cup of hot chocolate.Mr White was not a seaman for nothing.

With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world,China is desperately trying to clone (克隆)the animal and save the endangered species(物种).That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark.”
Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎),semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct,Dr.Duane Kraemer,a professor in Texas A & M’ s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China,is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week,Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer(核子移植)of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available (capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,”Kraemer believes.“They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk,so it is worth the effort,”adds Kraemer, who it one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M,the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark.We’re both trying to save animals that face extinciton.I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn form what they are attempting to do.It’s a research that is very much needed.”

The common cold is the world’s most widespread illness, which is plagues (疫病)that flesh receives.
The most widespread fallacy(谬误)of all is that colds caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses(病毒)passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one.It cold causes colds,it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not.And in isolated arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes.
During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches (战壕),cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds.
In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp(奥斯维辛集中营),naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds.
At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in Experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.
If,then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter?Despite the most pains—taking research,no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.
No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors(止痛片)such as aspirin, but all they do is to relieve the symptoms(症状).

Is language, like food,a basic human need?Judging from the result of the violent experiment by a German king.Frederick Ⅱ,in the 13th century,it may be.Hoping to discover what language a child would speak if the heard no mother tongue,he told the nurses to keep silent.
All the babies died before the first year. But clearly there was more than language deprivation here. What was missing was good mothering.Without good mothering,in the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive is seriously affected.
Today no such violent deprivation exists as that ordered by Frederick Ⅱ.Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive(不敏感)to the signals of the baby, whose brain is programmed to map up language rapidly. There are critical times,it seems, when children learn more readily. If these sensitive periods are neglected(忽视),the ideal time for gaining language skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again.
Linguists(语言学家)suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence(顺序)and at a constant age,but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turn out to be of high IQ.
Recent facts suggest that baby is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about Man’s brain, compared with that of the monkeys,is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of,say,a teddy-bear(玩具熊)with the sound pattern“teddy-bear”.
But speech has to be stimulated(刺激),and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child’s babbling(牙牙学语),grasping, crying and smiling, and responds to them.Insensitivity(不敏感)of the mother to these signals dulls(使迟钝)the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals.Sensitivity to the child’s non-verbal signals in essential to the growth and development of language.
67.Frederick II’s experiment was violent because .
A.he wanted to prove children are born with ability to speak

D.their brains have to absorb too much language at once
69.By critical times in Paragraph 3 the author means .
A.difficult periods in the child’s life
B.moments when the child becomes critical to its mother
C.important stages in the child’s development
D.times when mothers often neglect their children
70.Which of the following is NOT implied in the passage?

C.Early language starters are not necessarily highly intelligent.
D.Most children learn their language in definite stages.

When did you last see a polar bear(北极熊)?On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago,you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day,the air temperature was 3℃,and the water temperature was a little higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island,New York are usually about the age of 60.Members must satisfy two requirements.First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group;this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club.Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Dcotors don't agree about the medical effects of cold-winter swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops.Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm.Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water.A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.
The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim all year round;they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says,"When I go into water,I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."

Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life.Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk.In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However,I believe that five is the best age to learn.By five or six,a child knows fear of water,a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid,to recognize true danger.Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous.
To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn,as soon as possible, these four basic strokes;butterfly, backstroke, breastroke, and crawl.I feel that one of these-the breaststroke-is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training.
In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow:
1.Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don't risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you,you may get into trouble.
2.Don't go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach,Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good.
Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive.
3.Don't smoke.Swimming depends on a healthy body;good lungs are part of it.
4.Work at any activity that builds muscles.
69.Little children can learn to swim as soon as _____.

Is there a difference in meaning between"It's too late to make a telephone.Mary is asleep now." and "It's too late to telephone.Mary will be asleep now?"
Yes.The difference is in the reason given for it being too late to telephone. In the first sentence"Mary is asleep now",the speaker is stating a fact.In the second sentence"Mary will be asleep now," the speaker is saying what Mary usually does.In fact,it's possible that Mary isn't asleep, but she is usually asleep at this time.
So let's take two situations. In the first case, imagine Mary's mother answers the telephone.
You:"May I speak to Mary,please?"
Mother:"No.It's too late.Mary is asleep now."
You:" Are you sure?It's only 10 o'clock."
Mother:" Yes.I went to her room and she was asleep."
The mother knows that Mary is asleep because she went into her room and saw her.
Here is another case. Two friends decide to telephone Mary.
Jack:"Let's telephone Mary.It's 10 o'clock."
Jill:"No,It's too late. She will be asleep now."
Jill knows that Mary always goes to bed before 10 o'clock ,so now she'll probably be asleep. But it is also possible that she is staying up late.
73.In the first situation,Mary's mother_____.
A.wants to tell you that she knows Mary is asleep B.knows that Mary was asleep
C.has no idea whether Mary is asleep or not D.wants to know if she can take a message for Mary
74.In the second situation,Jill_____.
A.knows that Mary has gone to bed B.doesn't know that Mary is asleep
C.thinks it's likely that Mary cannot answer the telephone D.is sure that Mary can not answer the telephone

Glynis Davis:
I first piled on the ponds when I was in the family way and I couldn’t lose them afterwards. Then I joined a slimming club.My target was 140 pounds and I lost 30 pounds in six months.I felt great and people kept saying how good I looked. But Christmas came and I started to slip back into my old eating habits.I told myself I’d lose the weight at slimming classes in the new year…but it didn’t happen.Instead of losing the pounds.I put them on.I’d lost willpower and tried to believe that the old bage of fish and chips didn’t make any difference but the scales don’t lie.
Roz Juma:
To be honest,I never weigh myself any more I’ve leant to be happy with myself. It seemed to me that I would feel sorry about every spoonful of tasty food that passed my lips.My idea is simple. You shouldn’t be too much thinking about food and dieting.Instead, you should get on with life and stop dreaming of a supper-thin body. This is obviously the size I’m meant to be and, most of all.I’m happy with it.
Lesley Codwin:
I was very happy about winning Young Silmmer of the Year.I’d look in the mirror unable to believe this slim lady was me!That might have been my problem——perhaps from then on I didn’t pay any attention to myself.Winning a national competition makes everything worse, though, because you feel the eyes of the world are fixed upon you.I feel a complete failure because I’ve put on weight again.
Ros Langfod:
Before moving in with my husband Gavin,I’d always been about 110 pounds, but the pleasant housework went straight to my waist and I put on 15 pounds in a year.Every so often I try to go on a diet …I’m really good on a few days, then end up having the children’s leftovers or eating happily chocolate——my weakness.I’d like to be slim, but right now my duty is the children and home.I might take more exercise when my kids are older.

Chinese basketball players have never been so close to the NBA before but questions remain about how they will adjust to life in the NBA if they go.
Wang Zhizhi, the 2.16-metre center for the Bayi Rockets who was chosen by the Dallas Mavericks two years ago,has finally received permission from authorities to travel to Dallas to play for the rest of the NBA season after he finishes playing in the Chinese Basketball Association’s finals on March 25th.If he has no problems with his visa(签证),Wang will be the NBA’s first Asian player.Wang was chosen by the Mavericks in the second round of the 1999 draft but the Rockets, and army-run club, refused to let him go.After negotiations(谈判)between the Rockets and NBA representatives(代表),the decision was made to allow Wang the chance to try his hand at American basketball, but only for a period of short time.He has to be back to play in the Ninth National Games in November in Guangzhou.

The Great Wall of China is considered to be the only
man-made project seen from the moon. Although it was
once thought to have been built entirely during the Qin Dynasty( 朝代) between 221 and 208 BC, it is now believed to have been started
earlier.
The 15-foot-high, 25-foot-wide,
1,500-mile-long structure was
undoubtedly built to keep out invading enemies. To the common people of the
empire, who had been forced to build the wall, it was not worth it, however.
The wall, and other public works completed by the Qin Dynasty, had caused great
losses on the wealth and human life of the country. As a result, an angry population
rose up in rebellion(反抗)against the Qin Dynasty, and in

When you turn on the
radio, you hear an advertisement. When you watch television, you hear and see
an advertisement. If you turn the pages of a newspaper or magazine, again you
find an advertisement. If you walk down the street, you see one advertising
board after another. All day, every day, people who want to sell you something
compete to catch your attention. As a result, advertisements are almost
everywhere.
In the West, advertisements are the fuel that makes
mass media work. Many TV stations, newspapers, magazines, radio stations are
privately owned. The government does not give them money. So where does the
money come from? From advertisements. Without advertisements, there would not
be these private businesses.
Have you ever asked yourself what advertising is?
Through the years, people have given different answers to the question. For
some time it was felt that advertising was a means of “keeping
your name before the public.” And some people thought
that advertising was “truth well told.” Now more and more people describe it in this way: Advertising is
the paid, nonpersonal (非针对某个人的), and usually persuasive
(有说服力的) description of goods, services and ideas by
identified sponsors (明确的出资者)through various media.
First, advertising is usually paid for. Various
sponsors pay for the advert sements we see, read, and hear over the various
media. Second, advertising is nonpersonal. It is not face to face
communication. Although you may feel that a message in a certain advertisement
is aimed directly at you, in reality, it is directed at large groups of people.
Third, advertising is usually persuasive. Directly or indirectly it tells
people to do something. All advertisements try to make people believe that the
product, idea, or service advertised can do good to them. Fourth, the sponsor
of the advertisement must be identified. From the advertisement, we can see if
the sponsor is a company, or an organization, or an individual. Fifth,
advertising reaches us through traditional (传统的)and
nontraditional mass media. Included in the traditional media are newspapers,
magazines, radio, television, and films. Nontraditional media include the mail,
matchbox covers, and billboards (广告牌).

Children start out as
natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them
enjoy science can be easy; there's no need for a lot of scientific terms or
expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children's curiosity(好奇). Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of
seven-year-olds to talk about
science as a job. The children asked me “textbook
questions” about schooling, salary(薪水) and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat
facing one another in silence. Finally I said, “Now
that we're finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about
science?”
After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper (蚱蜢) eat?
When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?”
This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two
hours.
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the
past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait
only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When
adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical(符合逻辑的), complete and creative answers.
Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child
involved in a science discussion, don't jump in with “That's
right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior(行为). But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that
discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That's interesting” or “I'd never thought of it that way before”, or
coming up with more questions or ideas.
Never push a child to “Think”. It doesn't make sense, children are always thinking, without your
telling them to. What's more, this can turn a conversation into a performance.
The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so
that he will be a smaller target (目标) for your
disagreement.
Lastly, show; don't tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson
children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at
their fingertips through a magnifying glass(放大镜), and
they'll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying
that water evaporates (蒸发), set a pot of water to boil
and let them watch the water level drop.
71. According to the passage, children are natural
scientists, and to raise their interest, the most important thing for adults to
do is .
A. to let them see the world around
B. to share the children's curiosity
C. to explain difficult phrases about science
D. to supply the children with lab equipment
72. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the
word “lists” could best be
replaced by
A. any questions B. any problems
C. questions from textbooks D. any number of questions
